The knower of God [1] is the one who, when he speaks, you see the light of the divine presence [2] in his speech, and when he is silent, you see the light of the divine presence in his silence. His outward appearance is with creation, but his inner being is with the Truth [3]. He is with people in his body, but with God in his heart.

Its author—may Allah pardon him, illuminate his heart with the lights of His knowledge, and make him among those who comply with His commands and act according to His Book and Sunnah—said: When I had finished discussing the visitation 1 of his blessed tomb—upon him be prayers and peace—at its known time along with the pilgrimage to the Sacred House of Allah, and mentioned what pertains to that of the etiquette of visitation at his noble station, observed with the eye of veneration and glorification, in the journey prior to this one in full, I have now presented in this journey the mention of his blessed visitation in all months, years, hours, times, all nights and days, the venerated festivals, the honored days, and the great seasons. We traverse the desert wilderness, then cover mile after mile in the barren land. The camel drivers urge them on joyfully with longing, and their voice heals the sick. You see those mounts ending at the athilat 13 of the sanctuary, quenching the thirst. They graze on lavender in the meadows and embroider the earth with abundant embroidery. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him at the two hours of early morning and forenoon and witnesses what he has of acting according to the requirements of the Book, the Sunnah, and the tolerant Hanifiyya 69, says: "By Allah, this is the treatment for those with apparent and hidden diseases and the healthier, and the beloved, whoever increases blessings upon him in his night and day, his sin is forgiven and erased."
This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah 70. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in the two hours of midday and noon 71, and witnesses what he has of illumination of the heart and purity of the inner self, says: "This, by Allah, is the luminous sun of the horizons, the possessor of manifest miracles and widespread wonders, and the abundant gifts and the luminous openings 72 and the abundant secrets." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in the two hours of departure and afternoon 73, and witnesses what he has of clear proof and secret, says: "This, by Allah, is the sword of divine care and subjugation, the great in rank and danger, swift in response, the one sought for help on land and sea." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in the two hours of afternoon and late afternoon 74, and witnesses what he has of vast generosity and abundant giving, says: "This, by Allah, is the cure for the sick, the rain of abundant grace, the orator of the majestic Lord's presences, the intimate one who has no peer in the worlds nor any likeness." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in the two hours of evening and sunset 75, and witnesses what he has of preserving the limits and establishing the five prayers, says: "This, by Allah, is the pure in branch and origin, the master of angels, jinn, and humans, and the best through whom Allah repels calamities and misfortunes of ill omen and adversity." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in the two hours of dusk and twilight 76, and witnesses what he has of lifting the punishment of transformation from his community, and of sinking and drowning, says: "This, by Allah, is the light that appeared before the creation of all beings and preceded, the beloved whose branch flourished in the tree of knowledge and action and grew high, the bride whose fragrance spread in the gardens of existence and diffused." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his family. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in the two hours of darkness and deep night 77, and witnesses what his Lord erased through him of the religion of disbelief and demolished, says: "This, by Allah, is the Messenger whom his Lord protected from evils and punishments and preserved, the generous one who never turned away a petitioner nor deprived him, the intercessor through whose comprehensive mediation to Allah one's illnesses, ailments, and sicknesses are healed." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his family. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in the two hours of the period and the slip 78, and witnesses what he has of righteousness of religion and purity of the creed, says: "This, by Allah, is the adornment of companionship and friendship, the healing antidote for every disease and ailment, the intimate one who erases every sin and slip from those who send many blessings upon him." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in the two hours of nearness and brightness 79, and witnesses what he has with his Lord of glorification, veneration, and might, says: "This, by Allah, is the master whom Allah honored in the worlds, raised his rank, and exalted him, and manifested his elevation, honor, and triumph over all other prophets and messengers." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in the two hours of dawn and daybreak 80, and witnesses what he has of high standing and lofty rank, says: "This, by Allah, is the master of kings and kingdoms, of slave and free, the refuge of protection, the one who gives security to whoever seeks refuge with him from fear, terror, and panic." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him at the times of journeys and ascents 81, and witnesses what he has of humility before his Lord in prostration and bowing, says: "This, by Allah, is the master whose name is blessed at beginnings and commencements, the musk of the seal whose fragrance spreads in the gatherings of lovers and diffuses." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in the gloom of darkness and the blackness of the night 82, and witnesses what he has of perfections that cannot be counted nor measured, says: "This, by Allah, is the master of people, a light for the insight of the intelligent wise, the saint through whom Allah repels harm, injury, and adversity from his community." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him at the time of eyes closing and eyelids drooping 83, and witnesses what his Lord has gifted him with of gifts of contentment and pleasure, says: "This, by Allah, is the lamp of the worlds, the key to the treasures of paradise, the perfect in virtues who has no peer in existence nor a second." This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him in all times and seasons, and witnesses what he has of blessing, obedience, and abundant worship, says: "This, by Allah, is the master of masters, the object of all intentions, the source of sciences."
And the wisdoms and benefits, and the best of those who have passed in the preceding centuries and those who are to come. This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, a blessing by which You illuminate our hearts with his Muhammadan light and radiance, and give us to drink from the sea of his Ahmadine generosity and dew, and make us thereby among those who follow his prophetic path and are guided by his guidance, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. At the door of the one I love, humility is sweet, even if the blamer multiplies, justly and more amply. His love is sweet, and passion, burning, ecstasy, torment, longing, and tears become clear. He makes the prostration of cheeks upon the dust for His pleasure, if that suffices. Whoever does not risk his soul in his love will not enjoy the vision of beauty. Whoever is longing, loving, bewildered, his innermost is torn apart by his longing. When he stands in the darkness of night, watching, he sees light shining from the Mount of the Embryos. The one he loves calls him: 'Come, by Our beauty, take a life from which there is no escape.' He witnesses a beauty that no describer can limit; hasten to its vision if you are swift. A lover and a lover, and at an hour of seclusion, draw near, and a union without refusal. Its author, may Allah pardon him and make him among the people of obedience and piety, and grant him righteous deeds that will please him on the Day of Resurrection and Reckoning, said: When I had finished speaking about visiting his luminous shrine 84, his blessed and exalted station, and his pure city which Allah chose as a resting place for his illuminated body before creation and manifestation, I wished to speak about what the visitor does when he intends to leave the honored city and return to his homeland with joy, happiness, and delight, and his farewell to the witness at his luminous shrine, his respected and accepted presence. So I say: People in this regard are of various types and kinds, due to the intensity of separation and the shock of loneliness and severance. Among them are those who experience the pain of farewell like that of a dying person at the moment of death or a weaned child at the loss of nursing. Among them are those seized by a tremor, shaking like a sparrow. Among them are those struck by a stupor, speaking but not responding, while their eyes overflow with tears and boil. Among them are those whose breasts tighten, murmuring and roaring like a fierce lion. Among them are those seized by a spiritual attraction 85, dancing on fingertips and swaying like drunkards. Among them are those who tear the veils and cast off restraint, saying: 'This is my abode until the Day of Resurrection and Reckoning.' Among them are those overtaken by states, hiding their ecstasy and rapture, their faces changing color like paper dyed with saffron water or the color of the Khabur River. Among them are those who embrace the wall of the honored garden 86 and say: 'I call you to witness that I have left for love of him wealth, children, and veiled women.' Among them are those who rub their faces in its dust and shake its curtains, saying: 'Let me go, count me among the dead and the inhabitants of graves.' Among them are those who travel in the light of the Muhammadan secret within their innermost, revealing what the veils have hidden of the secrets of the unseen and what the screens have concealed. Among them are those who see his essence clearly, then become annihilated in his Ahmadine beauty and do not regain consciousness for ages and epochs. Among them are those who, when they kiss his honored chamber, find its fragrant breeze more fragrant than ambergris, pure musk, aloeswood, Indian oud, and camphor, and more fragrant than jasmine, narcissus, rose, clove, and the breeze of flowers. Among them are those who praise Allah and thank Him, saying: 'I have made a great profit; this is a gain with which Allah has honored me, and a trade that will never perish.' Among them are those who say: 'A stored-up deed, a thanked effort, a righteous action that saves from the heat of blazing fire and the torment of scorching wind.' Seek not departure from the door of the Beloved, then you will see Him morning and evening. Rub your cheek on the dust of the abode and cling, as long as you live, to sighing and wailing. Converse with the doves of the sanctuary of the beloved, lamenting, and mix your overflowing tears with joys. Wound your cheek with tear-water, for it is a wound that inflicts wounds in the heart. Stand at the dwellings and call out in their courtyards, and sacrifice yourself to gain profit. And when you are drunk with the wine of love that guides joy and dispels sorrows, be bold in love for them, who were born in their beauty, and make your hearing in existence a cry. No blame on the drunkard in the law of love if he divulges the guarded secret and reveals it. Revive the spirits from their encounter, and delight in the closeness of their union and be at ease. The spirits of the flowers of the breeze, when they bear fruit, revive the spirits by inhaling their breeze. Arise and inhale, if you have no cold, the scent of the Beloved, for it has diffused and spread. Among them are those who take hold of the curtains of his shrine and bid him farewell like a longing stranger, their eyes pouring tears like flowing spouts and gushing clouds. Among them are those who blame themselves and rebuke them for lagging behind that station and traveling with companions. Among them are those seized by bewilderment, closing their eyes in shyness and addressing him with the tongue of fear and awe. Among them are those who sip the bitter aloe of patience, having borne from the pain of separation what is bearable and what is not. Among them are those who say: 'Leave me, for dwelling near his luminous shrine is dearer than the light of sight and the blackness of pupils.' Among them are those who say: 'Pray the funeral prayer over me and leave me in his dust until the Day of Gathering and Meeting.' Among them are those whose veins burst, trembling in fear, swaying like a branch on a windy day with leaves. Among them are those who diminish until they are annihilated from their annihilation in the beauty of the Master of Messengers, pure in origin and lineage. Among them are those whose bodies grow large from the intensity of ecstasy and rapture until space cannot contain them and the belt becomes too tight. Among them are those who seek to return to him and ask Allah by his rank to be among those who hasten to visit him, the foremost. The love of the Beloved carries what cannot be borne; longings do not consume it. Can passion bear one who does not perish, then perishes while his heart flutters? His heart flies to the full moon of Sal', his breaths are taken by longings. The restless one finds no rest in one whose collars have slipped in his beauty. He upon whom hearts always yearn, and to whom souls are led. He upon whom the unseen manifests, a heart of a lover, whose absorption in the Chosen One is total. He whom hearts secretly call, and lovers call at his door. They bowed at his mention, then necks were stretched in unseen realms for Ahmad. Whoever saw him trembled in fear, and his soul nearly departed. The awe of the Chosen One melts mountains; how then do companions not dissolve? Do you not see the companions when they sat before him, their heads lowered? Yet with all that, he had a smile, modesty, and a radiant face. Allah veiled his beauty from eyes; can pupils perceive it? How can we know the perfection of a radiance that eyes and experts cannot bear? Blessings be upon him, his family entirely, and his Companions, as long as the she-camels come to him.
And among them is one who rejoices and says: "These days in which we are guests of the Master, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), are better than all the days of the world." And among them is one who constantly utters its remembrance, so no period of slackness overtakes him in that, and he affirms its excellence. And among them is one who spends the night therein standing (in prayer) and asks Allah to send upon him clouds of His mercies and to attain the precious downpour and drizzle thereof. And among them is one who seeks refuge in its blessing from the vicissitudes of time and sleeps in its preceding folds and the inheritance of its shade. And among them is one who praises it and says: "These are the brightest faces of time, and seasons of joy and delight for the people of love and faith (51), and a place of blessing and security, and abodes of mercy, pardon, and forgiveness, wherein the Creator manifests to creation with attributes of perfection and beauty, and looks upon them with the eye of gentleness, affection, joy, and acceptance, and bestows upon them contentment, good pleasure, generosity, munificence, favor, and boons, and grants them therein what they ask, and does not alter their faces out of desire for hope and lack of answer to the request. And how could I leave them and return to a land where the causes of earthquakes and terrors alternate, and the means of trials and events of fear and dread follow in succession, and the calamities of time and the causes of torment and punishment accumulate? Were it not that love of one's homeland is part of faith, I would not have returned, but I am a servant who runs beneath the currents of destinies and is content with what the Great and Exalted Master has decreed for me, and I entrust the judgment to Him and submit to Him in all matters and states. Oh, what a farewell that makes the solid mountains tremble, and at whose horror the suckling infants and children turn gray, and souls are violently torn away, and livers are rent asunder, and hearts are shattered in pieces! Everyone tastes the bitterness of its flavor and suffers the intensity of its terror and the pain of its separation. Alas, alas! How burning is the pain of this farewell upon souls, and how strong it is! And alas, alas! For parting from (52) the shrine upon which mercies descend from the Beloved Master, our Master Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), whom He chose for the message and approved, and honored above all creation and selected. So, O Allah, bless him and his family with a blessing by which his abode is honored, and his final state is ennobled, and by which he attains, on the Day of Resurrection, his wish and pleasure in intercession for his community, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Whenever the breezes of the east wind blow, they stir the soul towards you with joy. O moons of beauty, how often have you renewed for a lover a glance, and he was drawn away! You and the soul are one thing, but the soul is guilty before you. You are the head, and my soul is the tail; * Would the head be separated from you as a tail? Your beauty has captivated me, overwhelmed me, * And stolen the sweet sleep from my eyelid. Your love has made me forgetful, made me restless; * Your love has made me like a sorrow. Whenever I lament over you with burning passion * And yearning, my heart increases in flame. I am like al-Khansa' when I weep for you, * And when I weep, I make the clouds weep. Tell me, where are you, my masters? * Have you dwelt in my heart or in a dome? Or do you have an appearance in both abodes? * Have you inclined towards the east or the west? All beings were driven for you, * And to you every heart turns. (53) Your love has permeated everything, * And to you everything is drawn. Exalted is He who singled you out in your beauty; * Your beauty has made (you) beloved in every heart. If a caravan sees your lights, then oh, * The joy of the caravan! They have seen what delights! Taybah (Medina) is good; they are good through it; * How good is the good earth of the Chosen One (al-Mustafa)! They sought therein a good Beloved; * Whoever comes to it attains the sought-after. The Master of masters, the Crown of the prophets, * The very eye of the elect of existence, The Seal of the messengers, the Intercessor of intercessors, * And the most eminent of all messengers in rank, The pure, unlettered Prophet who * Rendered creation incapable by what he expressed. The meanings of his utterance amazed people, * Whether non-Arabic in his speech or Arabic. The most beautiful of people in a radiant countenance; * From him a light stirred with Ahmad. May the blessings of Allah encompass his grave, * And upon his family and close companions. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our Master and Patron Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, Your great Beloved of high station and rank, and Your chosen one regarded with the eye of piety and respect, and Your foremost saint in the stations of the people of emulation and faith, and Your Prophet preferred above the prophets, messengers, saints, righteous, and the noble, honored (54) angels brought near—he whose visitor, when he visits his shrine borne upon the shoulder of veneration and glorification, and delights his sight in his garden surrounded by the gifts of openings and abundant favors, and thinks that the fire of his heart has been extinguished at farewell, and the tears of his longing have been exhausted at the tearing of the veils of patience and the uncovering of the face, and the flashes of his states have subsided at parting from those illuminated courtyards and places—their clouds accumulate with pouring tears, and their conditions take shape by examining those ruins and dwellings. And their speaker says, with the tongue of the state and the clearness of speech, when the signs of return and departure appeared to him: "How can the soul part from its body, in which it finds good abode and settlement, and the eye from its pupil, by which sight occurs, and the heart from its place, in which it revolves during the hours of night and the ends of day, and reflects upon its chambers surrounded by the manifestations of shining lights and illuminations, and its courtyards which are the visiting place of the angels brought near and the pure noble ones?" Upon him be the best of blessings and the purest of peace from Allah, throughout the passage of days and nights, and the succession of months and years, as long as rain pours down and clouds shed forth, and a rose opens from its buds, and a turtledove coos upon the pulpits of the myrtle and perfection. Amen, amen, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. He who dwells in Medina is purified * By a joy like the yearning of his she-camel. He remembers Ahmad with his Companion * With a soul (devoted to) Ahmad and the two Companions. If their abodes are distant, my heart * Remains with the children of those who have departed. (55) I spend the night nailed (fixed) in longing for them, * And I wake up enamored, passionately in love, sorrowful. No, by Allah, I will not forget a people * Who will stand up for us on the Day of Resurrection. If a calamity weighs heavily upon us, they were * The ones who bore that calamity for us. If we are absent and do not attend due to an excuse, * They were present with the beloved ones. Through Ahmad, errors return to beauty; * Through Ahmad, the sinner returns secure. Through Ahmad, we do not fear nor care * When the blazing Fire and the kindled (Hell) are mentioned. For all Muslims there is protection and standing, * And we, by the standing of Ahmad, have been protected. We affirm him and bear witness at all times, * And his community answers when we are called. Our testimony is that Allah is true, * And that Muhammad is the one sent among us. The Dominant (al-Muhaymin) chose him from Quraysh, * And sent him and named him the Trustworthy (al-Amin). And purified him from impurities while alive, * And the People of the House were called the Pure. O rider on a swift, heat-bearing she-camel, * Like an arrow of the horizon, singled out for the defiant ones, When you come to Medina after a time, * Then kiss its soil and those present. And stop at the Prophet and his two Companions, * And greet (them) forty times forty. And greet the Companions until * People think that you have gone mad.
And say to Muhammad and his two companions: When hardships come, remember Us 87. And do not forget, when We are absent, for We have not forgotten the confirmed covenant. We follow your religion in secret and openly, both living and dead. O son of the chaste women of Quraysh, and he whom the Lord of the worlds named: Muhammad, then Ahmad 88, pure in lineage, so he was called the master of the messengers. Your community is in dire need, so rescue them, for it is their custom, by your grace, to rescue us. They have known no prophet other than you, nor found any guarantor besides you. Are you not the most merciful of heart among the two heavy ones 89, and the most balanced in certainty when they reckon? And you were given intercession for all creatures at the Balance before the intercessors. May God bless you at all times, and whenever the mindful remember God. Stations of closeness and proximity, and scenes of goodness where friends and loved ones gather, and wherein the testimony is deposited with the master of the poles 90 and those with him from the family and companions, when they wish to return to their homelands and come back according to what has preceded in God's knowledge and will, even though each of them wishes to die in those illuminated places, courtyards, and spacious areas (57) — upon its inhabitant be the best blessings and purest peace, as long as a lover yearns at his mention and finds delight, and seeks intercession through his rank to God, so that his states become righteous and he devotes himself sincerely in worship and repents. Amen, amen, and praise be to God, Lord of the worlds. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his illuminated and noble tomb, and deposits with him the testimony prepared for the day of departure from the abode of this world and journeying, he returns with his heart turning towards his fragrant garden and saying: "Is there any way to return to this station?" O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his tomb, observed with the eye of lordship and preference, and deposits with him the testimony whose utterer wins happiness, veneration, and glorification, he returns saying: "Would that I had never left that station, preferred over all other blessed places in general and in detail." O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his tomb, which protects the entrant and the guest under its sanctuary, and deposits with him the testimony whose possessor is honored with everlasting bliss and abundant good, (58) he returns with his gaze looking towards Hanin, Shama, and Tufayl 91, and those delightful courtyards with idhkhir 92 and jalil 93, and araak 94, athl 95, and palm trees, saying: "How can one bear parting from places where the trustworthy Gabriel 96 descended, and where revelation and the Quran came down, to the possessor of the kohl-lined eye and the smooth cheek?" O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his tomb, distinguished by the gifts of illuminations and abundant good, and deposits with him the testimony that saves from the heat of the blazing fire and the torment of Sa'ir 97, he returns to his homeland, which God has made his love part of faith, while his tongue recites: "And He is over their gathering when He wills, All-Powerful" 98. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his honored and noble tomb, and deposits the testimony at his high, noble, and lofty station, he returns asking God to hasten for him the time of return and to strengthen his weak body for his visit. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad (59) Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his pure and clean tomb, and deposits with him the testimony which is the light of the transparent and unveiled body, he returns seeking intercession through his rank to God that He cause him to die within his illuminated sanctuary and admit him into his most protective refuge and the shade of his lush intercession. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his venerated and witnessed tomb, and deposits with him the testimony in which is the pleasure of our Lord, the King, the Worshipped, he returns with his eye overflowing with tears as if a sea poured over the meadows of eyelids and the plain of cheeks. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his tomb, surrounded by abundant favors and tables of generosity and munificence, and deposits with him the testimony — whoever ends his life with it is granted the decree of salvation at the Great Standing and the Promised Day — he returns asking God to fulfill for him the promises of returning to him, and to complete for him in his visit the desired and intended goal. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad (60) Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his blessed and fortunate tomb, and deposits with him the testimony by which its possessor ascends the ladders of honor and ascent, he returns asking God to prolong his life so that he may continue visiting him every year and return. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his tomb, clothed in robes of brocade and finest garments, and deposits with him the testimony which is the station of the people of watchfulness and witnessing, he returns with his heart reassured by the intimacy of meeting, and his eyes delighted by the sight of the places of the possessor of the overflowing Pool and the Praiseworthy Station. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his venerated tomb among red and black 99, and deposits with him the testimony by which a person wins in the Abode of Honor and becomes noble, he returns praising and thanking God for what his Lord has granted him of His grace, despite the enemy and the envious. So bless him, O God, and his family, a blessing by which You give us to drink from the nectar of his Kawthar 100 (61) that is overflowing, and grant us through its blessing what no eye has seen nor ear heard of everlasting bliss in the Abode of Honor and Eternity, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, such that when a visitor visits his tomb, sought by visitors and frequenters, and deposits with him the testimony which is the title of the winner of the pleasure of their Lord on the Day of Gathering and Calling, he returns with the tongue of his state seeking to return to him again and again, and saying to the one who comes to his radiance:
Indeed, He who imposed the Qur'an upon you will surely return you to a place of return 101. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his protective shrine 102, seeking refuge from worries and distress, and entrusts to him the saving testimony 103 that delivers its utterer from the darkness of the grave and the torment of bodies—returns while swallowing the pangs of separation from him, which is more severe upon souls than the loss of wealth, family, and children. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his shrine filled with gifts of support and aid 104, and entrusts to him the testimony that protects whoever dies upon it from the heat of Hellfire—an evil resting place—returns while having good opinion of his Lord, that He may conceal his fault on the day when truths become manifest and witnesses stand. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his shrine, whose light shines upon valleys and hills, and entrusts to him the testimony that is the treasure, the spoils, and the provision for the abode of permanence, whose bliss never fades as long as the dominion of our Generous, Bountiful Lord endures—returns while calling out: "O Gatherer of mankind for a Day about which there is no doubt, gather me and the spirit of our master Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in the highest assembly; indeed, You do not break the promise." O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his shrine, whose love is fixed in the core of the innermost being and heart, and entrusts to him the guiding testimony that leads its possessor to the path of goodness and right guidance—returns while calling out: "Intercession, O Messenger of Allah, for Allah has made you a mercy to servants, especially to those who stand at your door with sincere intention and belief, and come to you traveling from the Maghrib 105, which is the utmost distance and farthest of lands." O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his shrine, the destination in coming and going, and entrusts to him the testimony that is the desire of ascetics and worshippers—returns while saying: "O He who reunited Jacob with his son, reunite me with Your beloved, our master Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the master of masters, the delight of eyes, and the light of the blackness 106." O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his shrine, which is the Ka'ba 107 of visitors and seekers, and entrusts to him the testimony that is the spirit of faith and the essence of belief—returns with such longing for him that cannot be contained by ribs nor encompassed by the heart. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his shrine, chosen for his noble body before creation and existence, and entrusts to him the testimony that is the path of salvation, success, and bliss—returns joyful and delighted, while his state of tongue says: "Bestow upon me the return to Him, O Beneficent, O Beautiful, O Bountiful, O Bestower, O Generous." O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his shrine, which You have made a secure sanctuary for the resident and the nomad, and entrusts to him the testimony that cuts through the arguments of the people of denial and obstinacy—returns with his love increasing and his longing growing. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his shrine, which is the abode of people of seclusion and solitude, and entrusts to him the testimony through which the mercy of our Generous, Bountiful Lord is sought—returns while calling out: "O Allah, O Most Merciful, O Most Compassionate, gather me and my beloved Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and grant him intercession for me along with fathers, mothers, and children." So bless him, O Allah, and his family, the noble chiefs, and his Companions, the unique imams, with a blessing that suffices us against the evil of the people of oppression and corruption, and conveys us through it to the utmost desire and goal of Your pleasure and his pleasure, and makes it for us in this world and the Hereafter the best treasure and provision, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. I preserve its covenant, and far be it from me to break covenants, for my love has been purified. The heart has not seen its like, and impossible—by Allah, it is the Ka'ba of seekers. The garden of its pure knowledge is a spring for the hearts of glorious imams. The pool of its abundant succor is sweet water that the thirsty drinkers have approached. I recite no litany without its love; how excellent it is, and how excellent my litanies! It is my upright religion, and trials have not turned me away from the sayings of 'Ad 108. So my ancient passion for it is my passion, and my belief is as you love, my belief. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his blessed shrine and intends to return to his land, there befalls him at farewell what, if it befell the parting of black crows, would not resemble them, or if it befell solid rocks, would melt them. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his blessed shrine and intends to return to his land, there befalls him at farewell what, if it befell mountains down to their firm foundations, would demolish them, or if it befell armies of hard hearts, would scatter and rout them. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his blessed shrine and intends to return to his land, there befalls him at farewell what, if it befell yearning souls, would cause them to overflow, or rebellious spirits, would refine and tame them. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his blessed shrine and intends to return to his land, there befalls him at farewell what, if it befell blooming branches, would shed their leaves, or brides of chambers, would tear their necklaces. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who—when a visitor visits his noble shrine and intends to return to his land, there befalls him at farewell what, if it befell radiant full moons, would dim their brightness, or masters of hidden passions, would spread their yearnings.
O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits his venerated tomb 109 and wishes to return to his homeland, there befalls him at the time of departure what, if it befell wild beasts roaming, would make them abandon their sustenance, or if it befell craftsmen of important trades, would make them forsake their markets. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits his honored tomb and wishes to return to his homeland, there befalls him at the time of departure what, if it befell fierce lions, would make them submit and stretch their necks, or if it befell kindled fires, would make them extinguish and cease their burning. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits his excellent tomb and wishes to return to his homeland, there befalls him at the time of departure what, if it befell sweet seas, would make their taste bitter, or if it befell sailing ships, would detain them and halt their course. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits his glorified tomb and wishes to return to his homeland, there befalls him at the time of departure what, if it befell the gates of heaven, would close their locks, or if it befell the earth, would blacken and darken its horizons. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, a blessing by which our souls may escape from the prison of separation and loosen its bonds, and release what has held them back from reaching You, and relieve their suffocation, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his family and homeland, weeps the weeping of a stranger and rejoices in the warbling of what is in his heart. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to the homeland of his fathers and forefathers, weeps the weeping of one whom obstacles have prevented from what he intended and who has not attained his desire. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his family and children, weeps until the people of his love and affection weep at his weeping. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to the place of his birth and nativity, weeps until sleep shuns his eyelids and he abandons his bed and rest. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, a blessing by which You may lead us on the path of his guidance and rectitude, and save us thereby from the heat of the fire of Hell and the blaze of its kindling, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his abodes and homelands, his sighs follow one after another, his regrets intensify, and he says: How can patience be justified for one who is more beloved to a person than himself, his wealth, his family, and his brothers? O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his family, his kin, and his neighbors, he throws himself upon his tomb and begins to rub his face upon it and wipe his forehead and the tears of his eyelids with its covering. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his birthplace and his teeth 110, he returns while his heart remains in Taybah 111, contemplating the living of al-‘Aqiq 112 and its builder. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his abode and place, he returns with glances toward those lands that contain the bones of my master, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and which Allah has made a garden from the gardens of His Paradise. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, a blessing by which we may be among those whose love is attached to his veins, his joints, and the core of his heart, and who seek protection in his most secure sanctuary and enter his fortified fortress and his safety, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. To the abode of the noble ones the mounts hasten, * So for the high aspiration, traverse the deserts. O you who claim love, but whose excuse shames him, * How long will you remain absent from the presence of honor? You used to waste away in longing for the beloved, * But who has made you today avoid them? To Taybah, the land where the tents of sublimity are pitched, * So urge the mounts of resolve to cut through desires. By visiting the grave of the Hashimite 113 Muhammad, * You will attain wishes truly and reap gifts. Life has passed without your achieving a desire, * And you have not fulfilled your duty toward his basil 114. So die of grief if you do not attain union with them, * And melt in regret, and pour forth streaming tears. And call out, yearning, the arrows of separation toward him, * Arrows that strike the very cores of hearts. They struck a heart that the hand of love has cut, * So circumstances have become straitened for you in its paths. His abode has come from you against his will, * O regret that has led to calamities for a heart. How often he sought to draw near, but his resolve collapsed, * And who can overcome the command of Allah? O best of Allah's creation, I call upon You hoping, * And whoever calls upon You does not return disappointed. If distance from your shrine has kept me away and my sin has overtaken me, * Yet I have headed toward You repentant. Perhaps You will intercede for me on the Day of Gathering, for I, * By praising You, have become a seeker of forgiveness. I have never ceased to be a praiser of the family of Muhammad * And his Companions, who are exalted in ranks. Upon them be the peace of Allah as long as a yearning one yearns, * And as long as a driver drives the swift camels toward him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his place and abode, returns while his thoughts yearn for his illuminated lands and dwellings. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his regions and quarters, returns while the worlds of his secret turn toward his tomb and seek to bring down showers of his mercies and torrents of rains.
He who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his homeland to fulfill his needs and desires, returns while his eye sheds tears of sorrow for leaving his noble sanctuary and the precincts of his dwellings. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad 73, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his family and neighbors, returns while the nightingales of his joys sing of his lofty virtues and beautiful reports. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his soil and walls, returns while his face beams with what he has witnessed of the gleaming secrets of Muhammad 115 and the rising lights. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to the destinations of his intimacy and the gardens of his trees, returns while his neighbors circle his noble chamber and cling to its curtains. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his family, relatives, and in-laws, returns while the hidden secrets of his conscience are adorned with the sight of his beacon and the mosques of his remembrances. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad 74, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his villages, towns, and cities, returns while his heart is captive to his illuminated places, his highlands, and his lowlands. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his land which he used to frequent before the fall of his tooth and his seeking forgiveness, returns while his spirit is refreshed by the breeze of the fragrance of his exalted tomb in his mornings, evenings, afternoons, and early mornings. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his houses in which he settled in his past ages and eras, returns while his heart is absent in his beauty and his tongue utters his remembrance night and day. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his lands where he takes refuge upon returning from his travels, returns while the influx of his yearning personifies those courtyards where, from the line of his saddle, he is safe from the deceit of time and from torment and consolation in his calamities and evils. 75 O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when a visitor visits him and wishes to return to his dwellings which he loved and which loved him, and where he took refuge in his coming and going, returns while asking Allah to return him to his goodly city 116, whoever resides in which, his past and future sins are forgiven. How noble is this visit, of great worth, lofty pride, as if it were the Night of Decree 117 in reward and wages, or the night of the Feast of Breaking the Fast and the Feast of Sacrifice in seasons and the bright days of the ages, and as if in beauty and loveliness it were a pearl cast forth by the depths of the seas, adorned with whose necklace the secluded ones of the tents and the brides of the pavilions are bedecked, or a breeze that blew from the carpet of mercy, whose fragrant scents were inhaled by the men of intimacy with Allah and the people of absence and presence 118, and the masters of states 119 and the people of obscurity and manifestation attained the alchemy of its secret, or a righteous vision seen by a righteous man in attaining the pleasure of his Lord, which came true and he received it with joy and delight, or a sea of secret that overflowed in the assemblies of lovers, by which souls revived and breasts expanded, or rare praises composed by a lover concerning the virtues of the inhabitant of Mecca and Medina 120, upon him be the best of prayers and the purest of peace, so that mouths delighted in their mention 76 and hearts and ears were pleased with them throughout the passage of ages and times. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, the crescent moons, the full moons, and his noble companions, the leaders, a blessing whose breezes bestow upon his honored grave in the afternoons and mornings, and whose blessing encompasses us at the trial of the grave and the questioning, and on the Day of Resurrection and Rising, and which gives us by its virtue in the Abode of Bliss what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor has it occurred to any human heart, of chambers and palaces and successive blessings, and immortal youths and houris, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Look upon what state the ruins have become, and let your tears flow in the corners of the eyes. And stand the stand of a mourner at their abodes, and weep for what your past days have committed. To God belongs a dwelling that became empty of its people and was effaced, for thought in some of it, from occupation. It became, on the day the companions departed, at forenoon, and my ribs with the fire of separation blaze. O travelers with my heart and the heart together, towards you I have a hope, if only my hope would be realized. By the right of my longing for the plain of al-‘Aqiq 121, when you come to the land of Dhat al-Munhana 122, then alight there and say: A stranger, far from you, in the west has become, and from him the paths are blocked. To a goodly land his soul yearned, so he turned, by its mention, a branch swayed by inclination. Why not, when in it resides, encamped, a Master by whose virtue the angels and messengers testify. 77 To him intercession on the Day of Gathering has been granted, while people are encompassed by terrors and fear. Exalted is Abu al-Qasim 123, the Praised One, his bounty exalted, by the secrets of the secret of the Truth he is connected. Through him the lights of the sun of guidance shone for us, and whoever says other than this is deluded. He is the one whose pride has surpassed every highness, so he has no peer or likeness among creatures. He is the one whose praise is pride and honor, and his love never ceases to cure ailments. Its author, may Allah pardon him and bestow upon him the vision of the Master of Mankind and grant him therein what he loves and delight his eyes with it in wakefulness and sleep, said: When I finished speaking about the visitation of my master, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the best of prayers and the purest of peace, I began to seek the vision of his blessed face and the contemplation of the unique jewel of his beauty, so that thereby, Allah willing, the purpose might be completed, the aim and desire attained, the influx of longing, ecstasy, and passionate love for him might multiply, and the light of guidance, faith, and Islam might be renewed in the hearts of lovers, because he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, 78 is the brick of completion, the musk of sealing, the imam of the expert scholars, the master of the prophets, angels, and noble messengers, and the possessor of the great intercession on the Day of Presentation and Crowding. And he said: "Whoever sees me in a dream has truly seen me, for Satan cannot assume my form." Meaning that his vision is not confused dreams, but rather a gift from Allah to His servant in wakefulness and sleep. And he, peace be upon him, said: "Nothing remains of revelation except the glad tidings." And he said:
The dream of the believer is one part of forty-six parts of prophethood 124. I say—and from Allah I hope to attain the goal and achieve the request—there are noble, beautiful visions and blessed signs by which hearts are delighted and eyes are comforted, and by which the servant hopes from his Lord to attain contentment, stations of proximity and nearness, and dwelling with him—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—in the highest 'Illiyin 125 and the paradises of gardens. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the seer sees at the time when the Truth manifests to him upon the Throne of His establishment 126 and looks upon him with the eye of His majesty and beauty and draws him to the presence of His proximity and election, and witnesses what his Lord mentioned about him in His revealed books of praise and commendation, he says: Allahu Akbar! By Allah, this is the intimate one whom his Lord created from the purity of His light and radiance, adorned him with the jewels of His attributes and names, and handed him the keys of the treasuries of His unseen 127 which none of His messengers and prophets have ever accessed. This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the seer sees at the time when revelation descends upon him in his state of elevation and ascension, and his sitting upon the throne of the sovereign kingdom and his domination, and witnesses his disposal over the Thronal and earthly spirits 128 and his subjugation of them with a spiritual power by which he subdued the armies of his enviers and enemies, he says: Allahu Akbar! By Allah, this is the succor 129 by whose means and supplication creatures benefit, tongues are engaged in his praise and commendation, and the maidens of secrets overflow from the gifts of his generosity and giving. This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the seer sees at the time when the angels hover over his grave in its morning and evening, and witnesses his dazzling miracles and supernatural events in his beginning and end, he says: Allahu Akbar! By Allah, this is the praised one whom Allah honored among His beloved and chosen ones, and raised his rank above the dominating angels 130 and the rest of His messengers and prophets. This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace and his family. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master, Your beloved, whom when the seer sees in his beautiful stature and the proportion of his limbs, and witnesses what his Lord granted him of majesty, awe, support, and victory over his enemies, he says: Allahu Akbar! This, by Allah, is the light that shames the brilliant planet 131 from the brilliance of his radiance and illumination, and submits in reverence to the loftiness of his rank and the honor of his station and exaltation. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the seer sees at the time when the light of majesty overflows upon his heart in the state of his proximity and election, and he says to me at a time when I have no room except for my Lord, and I am the bestower of the gifts of good things upon those on His earth, and witnesses the loftiness of his station with his Lord and the perfection of his honor and exaltation, he says: Allahu Akbar! By Allah, this is the saint 132 whom Allah has honored the people of the carpet of His presence and His companions, and the forbearing one whose forbearance encompasses the obedient and the disobedient, so all are included under the hem of his carpet and cloak. This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. A lofty station, an obedient servant, a wondrous secret, a messenger in whose hand is the banner of praise 133, an intimate intercessor, a mediator. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the seer sees at the time when the lights of divine self-disclosures 134 shine upon him, and minds are bewildered by what his Lord has clothed him with of the garments of His greatness and majesty, and honored him with the elite of His gnosis and His most special ones, and equipped him with the piety which is the support of the structure of His beloved and pious ones, until he said: "I am not like any of you; I spend the night with my Lord, He feeds me from the tender morsels of the unveiling of His beauty and gives me to drink from the drink of His purity and the basins of His satiation, and seats me upon the throne of His union, and hands me the fruits of His connection and loyalty," and witnesses his affirmation of servitude, acknowledgment of the right of lordship, and reliance upon Allah in the state of his poverty and wealth, he says: Allahu Akbar! By Allah, this is the imam 135 advanced upon the carpet of honor over the elite guardians of His covenants and trusts, and the law of the secret 136 interpreting from Allah what He has inscribed in the Preserved Tablet 137 of His command and decree. This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the seer sees at the time when the prayer of those who pray is presented to him and the greeting 138 reaches those near him and facing him, and witnesses the visitation of the cherubim 139 and the holy ones to him and their standing in his presence and meeting, he says: Allahu Akbar! By Allah, this is the shrine 140 around which the angels circumambulate his station and rejoice in meeting him, and the imam whom the noble elite followed on the night of his ascension and night journey 141. This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the seer sees at the time when he goes out among his companions and friends and the attendees of his presence and his viziers, and those who uphold the affairs of his religion and his helpers, and witnesses his preservation of the rulings of the Sharia and his great concern and care for that, he says: Allahu Akbar! By Allah, this is the sea of sciences 142 at which minds are bewildered in his intelligence and acumen, and the guardian of the hidden secret, whose gates of heaven open for his supplication in the darkness of night and his weeping. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, a blessing by which You gather us under the hem of his pride and banner, and make us in this world and the Hereafter among those preserved from the trial of time, the terror of the standing 143, and His wrath, punishment, and affliction, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Entrust the matter to Allah and adhere to the door of supplication, And seek intercession through him whose favor is over His creation, The master of messengers—what a prophet, how beautiful he is! He is my intercessor and my life in a station how terrifying! Would that I knew if I were among those who journey to him In safety from destruction, then with provision and mount, And see the best garden, surpassing the earth in entirety, Then call upon his Lord with excellent stations. Would that I were among those who saw him in his sleep to ask him About strange matters, so he would answer and pray for me. O my God, by his rank, be with me at the time of asking, At my placement in my grave, with terrifying angels. A flourishing garden, a raining cloud, A dazzling beauty, a shining moon, A pure body, an obedient master, forbidding and commanding, A prophet who has with his Lord a great rank, And an abundant portion and care to be proud of Over all the first and the last. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the seer sees his beautiful face, his aquiline nose, and the crescent of his eyebrow depicted without a horn, and witnesses his excellences, virtues, gifts, and favors, worry, grief, and sorrow leave him, his eye rests and slumber and sleep come to him, and he says: By Allah, this is beautiful indeed! The master of the prophets and messengers, whom Shiqq 144, Satih 145, Tubba' 146, and Sayf ibn Dhi Yazan 147 foretold. This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when the beholder sees the freshness of his handsome face and the jewel of his smiling mouth, and witnesses his complete delegation of affairs to Allah and his perfect contentment and submission, says: 'By Allah, this is the mercy for the weak, the poor, and the orphan 148, and the possessor of perfect religion, the straight path, and the upright way.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his family. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when the beholder sees the abundance of his radiant, thick hair and the forelock of his illuminated, majestic brow, and witnesses his excellent conduct and great character, says: 'By Allah, this is the forbearing, compassionate, kind, and merciful one, the affectionate and gentle with his community, the guarantor and leader, and the beloved in whom the lover becomes lost and enraptured by the beauties of his Muhammadan perfections 149.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when the beholder sees the white blaze of his moon-like face and the purity of his clean, most pure body, and witnesses his lordly openings 150, the most dazzling secret, the merciful effusion, and the strong, most abundant supply, says: 'By Allah, this is the essence of the most glorious honor, the branch of the most flourishing tree of glory, the most renowned sultan of the kingdom, the bearer of the green banner of praise, and Allah's gift to jinn, angels, black and white.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when the beholder sees his arched eyebrows and his kohl-rimmed, wide eyes, and witnesses the radiant light and brilliant splendor shining on his face, says: 'By Allah, this is the possessor of the clearest truth and the most manifest, plain religion.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when the beholder sees his beautiful face and the slenderness of his stature, free from every defect and flaw, and witnesses his freedom of heart from rancor and envy and his guarded tongue from slander, falsehood, and deceit, says: 'By Allah, this is the delight of the eye, the eye of every eye, and the bearer of good news that removes from hearts the loneliness of separation and distance.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad 151, Your beloved, who, when the beholder sees his magnificent station and his peerless, matchless tomb, and witnesses the blessing, veneration, and glorification, and the angels' visitation to him in the forenoon, early morning, and evening, says: 'By Allah, this is the possessor of revelation and the Quran, and the beloved of Israfil, Mika'il, Azra'il, and the trustworthy Jibril.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when the elephant of Abraha saw his light in the brow of the noble Abd al-Muttalib, it submitted and prostrated, saying: 'Peace be upon the light in your beautiful, radiant face.' Likewise, a brave man, when he saw him, fell down unconscious and said: 'I bear witness that you are the master of your people, O essence of eternal honor and ancient glory.' So blessed, then blessed, is he who believes in you and affirms your message, O my master and lord, O Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when the beholder sees his fragrant, perfumed grave and his sanctuary, a refuge for those who seek shelter from the hardships of distress and difficulty, and witnesses his ecstatic absorption 152 in the remembrance of his Lord and his constant devotion, says: 'By Allah, this is the life of souls and spirits, and the station that visitors seek and caravans journey to by night and in the dark.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when the beholder sees his grave, lofty in rank and degree, and his presence, free from base and ugly deeds, and witnesses the secret within it that rectifies hearts and stubborn souls from crookedness, says: 'By Allah, this is the sea of immense generosity, with great waves and foam, the gatherer of nations, protecting his community from the heat of blazing fire and the flame of embers, and the great hero who broke the backs of the polytheists with conclusive proofs and arguments.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, who, when the beholder sees his tomb, surrounded by beauty and splendor, and his lattice covered with robes of brocade embroidered with threads of silver and jet, and witnesses his abundant succor to those who seek his help in relieving distress and hastening relief 153, says: 'By Allah, this is the perfect in virtues, for whose praise the greatest poets compete with all arts of eloquence and their complete, basit, madid, ramal, and hazaj meters, and the beloved, upon whom, for sending many blessings, Allah bestows in the abode of honor what no eye has seen nor ear heard, of chambers, palaces, and beautiful-eyed houris with dazzling beauty and coquetry.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his family. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, possessors of high station and rank, and his companions, people of intelligence, acumen, and awareness, a blessing by which You admit us into his secure sanctuary and protection, and place us under his ample shade and beneath his banner, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. I seek refuge in that presence and find protection With him who rejoices at times of distress. I call upon him in this world, and he fulfills my needs, And to him I am most in need on the Day of Resurrection. If poets praise the masters of their time, I praise him from whose light the universe rejoices 154. If they mention Layla and Lubna, I am Enraptured by the mention of the beloved, pure of remembrance. By the place of sacrifice where necks are offered, And by him whom the ancient, adorned House encompasses, The visitors of Muhammad's grave have stirred my longing, So my longing travels and journeys with the visitors.
And you spend the evening with the splendor of the two hills 155, smiling, so you incite my passion to weep and stir it up. The guiding camels 156 remain in the valley of the Guide 157, plunging, while I have no howdah 158 in the caravan of lovers. And I am refreshed by the most pleasant of pure spirits, when musk diffuses in its regions. A land where he 159 drags his feather and descends from the sky's atmosphere and ascends. A Prophet 160 whose face's light makes the sun jealous, radiant, pure of teeth, with wide eyes 161 and black pupils 162. Through him, days increase in beauty and shine, just as religion and the world are illuminated by him. Noble morals, beautiful traits, and a character of pride that waves freely. A succor for the distressed, a rain for the visitor, and a help when the armored warrior 163 attacks. The enemies argue with him, but the sword is the judge over them, and the wind of victory blows among the people. Behind him is severe might, valor, and a judgment that the armored spear 164 sees. To you, O intercessor of sinners, is my trade: unique pearls 165 strung in the necklace of praises. And may God bless you as long as the east wind blows and the dawn's light shines. And those who migrated to you and the supporters from Aws and Khazraj 166 have attained a share from you. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when one sees him, he becomes [blessed], and the bearers of good tidings 167 appear on his face. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when one sees him, he becomes [blessed], and the masters of spiritual states 168 know him by his reality and essence. So bless him and his family with a blessing by which we may draw down the clouds of his Muhammadan goodness and abundant rain, and by which we may be among those who hold fast to his Ahmadan 172 Sunna 173 and cling to his rope, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Indeed, the vision of the Prophet who spoke truthfully: 'Whoever sees me has truly seen me' 174. So for you are glad tidings, hopes, and wishes, through a Beloved who conquered the universe with love. How often He has granted us a garden and bliss, and by my life, by his rank, we shall not be wretched. I am a slave and do not seek emancipation of bondage, but through him I hope for emancipation from the Fire. O intercessor of servants on the Day of Return, through him, for creatures, the West becomes East. The prophets are like a string of pearls, and you are like the crescent moon to ascend. My two friends, whoever blames me and isolates me calls me, for I respond to desire from whoever calls me. And if you insist on blaming me, then indeed, when you blame me, by Allah, what is in me increases. I sway with the remembrance of my beloved, as if I am, from longing, a branch shaken by the north wind. And I go about with him bewildered, not knowing what is in my right hand from my left in love. My heart, from my passion, flutters, and my tears flow like pouring clouds. And how can I, whose heart has fallen in love with him, and my passion has wasted me and consumed me? And there remains in my secret no place for other than him, and whoever sees me knows my sincerity in love. Even if I do not attain my desire from him, and my passion does not profit me except that it suffices me. And if he does not speak about me, my knowledge that he is aware of my request and my desire is enough. And I am not one who falsely claims love, and how could I, when I have what validates my claims? My illness, my lament, my sleeplessness, and my sigh are witnesses that inform people of what is within me. And indeed, I hope that my emigrant 192 will visit me and bring my visitation near, after he prolonged his distance from me. So, O my joy, endure; O my sorrow, cease; O ailment of my separation, its cure has come. And O asker about one who is passionate in his love, go slowly, for this love is under my banner. If you wish to meet all the lovers, drink the cups of the knowers 193 entirely. And if you realize the scent of gnosis 194 with them, you will attain the one I love despite the envious. And you will become the refuge of the inheritors 195 and their crown. For if a secret is one with its beloved, then it suffices you from all people that you see me. And I have left no remainder for the lovers in it. From a breeze that blew to them from his sides, and my gardens became radiant with union. And my soul among them flows with gnosis. For I have been openly delighted by the one I love. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, Your beloved, the one who, when seen by the beholder, the nightingales of joys dance in his branches. O Manifest One whose outward has stolen minds, and Hidden One whose inward has drawn souls, and O One who dwells in a heart that finds no rest, never has a lover's heart in which You dwell failed. So turn toward a lovesick one whose vital spirit has melted from what he suffers or what he witnesses, burning with passion, bewildered with regret, frenzied, his abodes desolate from his patience. And whenever You are mentioned to him, he complains and weeps, and his tears pour from his eyes. This is a tale whose love he has disclosed and revealed, and from his disclosure the hidden of love has become manifest to people. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees, the universes circumambulate his Ka'ba 199. So bless him, O Allah, and his family with a blessing that gladdens our hearts with the secret of his wisdom and manifests upon us the gifts of his grace and the witnessing of his favor, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Your beauty that calls to You has ended my endurance, what I have narrated, and the farthest after the farthest of the story. And it is nothing but that You appeared to my sight with the most complete attributes that surpassed beauty. And the rising place of lights with Your countenance, by whose splendor all moons have been hidden. And a description of perfection in You, the most beautiful form and the most upright of them in creation, from You derived. And an attribute of majesty from You, beside which my torment is sweetened and my killing becomes sweet to me. And a secret of beauty from You, by which every grace appeared in the worlds and was perfected. And a beauty that captivates minds guided me to the guidance of a beauty in which my humility for Your might became lost. And a meaning beyond beauty in You, which I witnessed, by which it became too subtle for the perception of the eye of my insight. For You are the desire of my heart, the utmost of my quest, the farthest of my wish, my choice, and my best. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees, whether awake or in sleep.
His tears began to drip upon the surface of his cheeks from the intensity of longing, like the falling of dew or the love of clouds. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees in the darkness of night and the gloom of shadows, his fragrance wafts in the gatherings of lovers like the scent of precious perfumes or the musk of sealing. The vision of the Chosen One 219, even in sleep, expands the breast with hopes, bringing glad tidings. A master whose face, when it manifests, you see the sun and moons in it. Light precedes his face wherever he walks, emanating from him and clothing the wall. Inward and outward, all is light for him; his parts have donned lights. That light never ceases to appear from him, in the darkness, making the Hijaz 220 radiant with splendor. The fragrance of his handshake envelops the one who shakes hands, so you see his palm as a fragrant gift. From his staff, its touch and scent, seek flowers in its touch. How great is the handshake of a beloved who accepts the seeker of refuge and protects the covenant. A master whose smile made flowers laugh when it appeared from his mouth and shone. From him, light ascends to the Throne, and the Throne seeks refuge in the light of Taha's 221 beauty. Every delight from the Throne to the carpet borrows beauty from the Beloved. The source of grace and beauty is the Messenger of Allah; how abundantly has his grace flowed! Beasts expressed the perfection of Taha when they saw him and encountered destinies. Upon him be from Allah the most excellent blessing and the purest peace throughout the passage of ages, eras, and times. O heart, you visited, yet that hidden passion did not fold away 246—strange is a heart that has withdrawn from bliss. Passion increased, and all patience vanished; I had treated it before the visit, and it folded away. The awe of my ecstasy, stirred by a garden 247, from whose beauty the powers of patience were dissolved. By God, my longing for Tayyibah 248 did not cease after I visited the Beloved, nor before it—rather, my longing increased for the Beloved and for Ramah 249, and for the two sandy tracts 250, and for what lies at the winding sand-dune 251. A land more beloved to the Exalted than the heights—the Messenger descended in it and therein lay buried. O soil, no soil like it—in it is healing for every sinner and the cure. O garden, no garden like it—O blessed is he who dwells in the Garden of Refuge 252! How long shall I lament over union, and when You granted me union, You kindled in me the fire of passion? It is as if I were the thirsty one who found a drop, then the intense thirst doubled and he was not quenched. I swear by the plain of Mecca 253 and by Ya Sin 254, who came in the Mighty Star when it fell 255, and by the two bows' length 256 of him who drew near to his Lord, possessing strength, then stood firm 257—I shall surely find my lamentation for my beloved ones, regret for that place and what it contains, until I die; and if I die bewildered, then for every Muslim servant is what he intended. O Lord, I ask You for contentment and pardon for what has passed, O You who are established on the Throne 258. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees in the land of Hijaz and Ramah, and witnesses what is in him of guidance and right conduct, he says: 'This, by Allah, is the light shaded by the cloud 259, and the Messenger of clear proof and sign.' And the Prophet upon whom Allah has made blessings a means of salvation for those who persist in them in the terror of the Standing 260 and the Day of Regret and Remorse. This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees in the land of Najd and Tihamah, and witnesses his dazzling miracles and extraordinary wonders and grace, he says: 'This, by Allah, is the possessor of the mole and the mark 261, and the intimate one whom his Lord took by night while Gabriel was before him, and he led all the prophets and messengers in prayer, thus making the religion of Islam manifest and raising its banners.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees in the plain of Mecca and its environs, surrounded by blessing and safety, and witnesses his glory, might, and perpetual care, he says: 'This, by Allah, is the best of those who raised the edifice of religion and established it, and the most excellent of those who revealed the face of the Sharia and removed its veil, and strove for Allah with true striving until he clarified the path of truth and made its rulings clear.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah. So bless him, O Allah, and his family with a blessing by which You write for us the seal of salvation and safety, and repel from us every taunt, disgrace, and blame, and make it between us and the vicissitudes of time the best shield and armor, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Console him 262 with Tayyibah and Baramah 263, and with the sandy hill of Naqa 264 and the valley of Tihamah. And carry from him to the Beloved a greeting—for by love, how sweet is the greeting! May God protect the neighbors who encamped at the curve of his passionate heart, and in a valley fresh of sides, they kindled the embers of hospitality and fanned its flame. Alas for my heart and what it meets of ecstasy—is there any helper to cure its sickness? Longing has tormented the yearning one until, by Allah, it almost melted his bones. Whenever he sought deliverance from his passion, he found ecstasy behind him and before him. Longing urged him to journey towards Quba 265, ecstatic, and led his reins. His heart strayed in the desert, but the light of Salma 266 guided him, and ecstasy revealed its smile. Tears follow from the corners of his eyes, chaste, and the clouds pour down. So count him among the visitors of a phantom in a dream, that he might fulfill his desire. May God prolong your life, O driver of the camel litter—be gentle in your journey, for I cannot endure it. And have mercy, leave a sick heart to inhale the scent of myrtle and lavender. Stop for a moment and turn aside a little at the sanctuary, that I might see its landmarks. Leave Sa‘da, Zaynab, Rabab, Su‘ada, ‘Alwa, and Amama. And cry out, O Sa‘d, the name of those who dwell in the sand, and call out at the winding sand-dune and head towards their tents. The eye has sworn that sleep shall not delight it, nor shall it hide the streaming tears, until it sees the chamber of the Messenger and complains, 'O Prophet of guidance, to You is my passion.' O orator of mankind, O gatherer of virtue, O qibla of guidance and its imam, the passion-consumed one has melted for You—how often does separation shoot arrows into his heart? Every year he seeks union with You—perhaps this year will be his year. Blessed is he who visits the grave of the best Prophet and prolongs his embrace and clinging. For he is a succor, a refuge, and a sanctuary, a bringer of glad tidings and an intercessor on the Day of Resurrection. And he is in his noble grave fresh—whoever greets him, he returns his greeting. So upon him be a greeting like the scent of ambergris, in every journey and stay. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees in the beginning of the pleasant Halifah 267 of pure air and water, and witnesses the lights of attributes and names that shine upon him, he says: 'This, by Allah, is the sacred sanctuary of Allah, and the possessor of the lofty rank and great station, the master of the people of earth and heaven, the light of prophethood and messengership, who unveils from hearts the coverings of ignorance and blindness.' This is my master, the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees at the mountain of Badr and witnesses his exalted station and high rank, he says: 'This, by Allah, is the master of black and red 268, and the full moon that shames the luminous stars and planets, and the Prophet whose night of birth is more noble than the night of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr, and greater than the middle of Sha‘ban, Ashura, and the Night of Power.' This is my master and lord, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his family. O God, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees in Mecca, the Mother of Cities 273, and witnesses his humility and weeping before his Lord in the wind and the night journey 274, he says: "By God, this is the possessor of dazzling miracles and the greatest signs, the best of those who trod the earth and were shaded by the green 275, the accepted beloved whose intercession benefits in this world and the next." This is my master and my lord, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and upon his family. I see the lightning of the lowland 276 when it appears, at the farthest Syria 277, it provided me with tears. And the easterly wind 278 of Najd 279 did not blow but it rained upon us fresh blood and water. Passionate love 280 divided me into sleeplessness and sickness for which I see no cure. And the physician made me ill; O my people, a physician who increased my illness with his remedies. O you who blame me and my long isolation, I am made a ransom for those I love. I conceal my tears from them out of longing, and I put on the garment of forgetfulness 281 for them as a show. O you who deny me brotherhood without offense, why and for what reason do you deny me brotherhood? So leave me and those whom I see my life and my death after they have departed are the same. (154) By Your right, have you asked the oath of Najd? Did you not find a meeting for our separation? And do you have knowledge of the pitched tent 282 so that you may know where it is pitched? And how can I ask the riders about one who dwells in Dhu al-Arak 283 and one who is far away? And the saddles of Taybah 284 are a Hashimite 285 whose disposition is generosity wherever he wills. The Imam of the Messengers and their chosen one, he encompasses all good, final and initial. All pride ends in his pride, so there is no end to his pride. Sufficient for him is the honor of the Ascension 286 as a virtue, by which in nearness he surpassed the prophets. He journeyed by night from Mecca on the Burāq 287 of might to the Farthest Mosque 288 and ascended to heaven. The doors were opened for him, and he passed through them to the Throne 289 ascending. The angels rejoiced in him, and the prophets prayed behind him in emulation. And his Lord spoke to him at the distance of two bows 290 and inspired him with praise in his greeting. So God, Almighty and Glorious, said: "Ask Me, for I do not will unless you will. The treasures of My mercy are for you; decree therein by your judgment, I do not withhold from you the gift." And God granted him intercession for every sinner and every obstacle that fears the recompense. And He raised him above the two worlds 291 in rank and fulfilled for him hope in high matters. Light, would that he favored me with the vision of his face ❖ Misery departs from all who see him Radiant, he meets the battalion smiling ❖ Even when faces are grim in battle The earth, by his touch, became fragrant ❖ So that by Allah, Lata 329 and Hira 330 trembled He shows the sweat of his brow as a sign of piety ❖ Just as the crescent moon shows purity His beauty is veiled by beauty, so marvel ❖ At a beauty whose own beauty is its veil He is like a flower appearing from the slit of the calyx ❖ Or like a branch from which the bark has split His radiance almost overwhelms the eyes ❖ Due to the intelligence of the wisdom within him

O Allah, tend the neighbors of al-Jar'a 358 and the domes known in Qaba' 359; may clouds water the valley of al-'Aqiq 360 with tears exceeding the rains. How many nights of union we spent there in perpetual bliss and pleasant meeting, when the Beloved visited us in the depths of the night, and we lived in that hour of the visit. O my friend, and you are the best of helpers, by Allah, if you desire brotherhood, refresh the heart with the remembrances of times that passed for us at al-Rawha' 361. Urge the camels for your resolve and seize the pleasure of life in the hills of al-Dahna' 362. Then turn without wonder and take me toward my flock in the fragrant meadow. Inhale the news of Salma and ask what revives the heart at the well of al-'Ala' 363. And when you reach Sal' 364, ask about the heart of a lover who yearns for a herd of gazelles—gazelles of the thicket, each a wild cow with a slender neck and a black eye, who pierces the heart with glances and captivates whoever sees her with a wide-eyed thrust. A continuous flow from her glance and her languid eye is the door of warning and enticement. My claim in love is for Sa'd and Layla 365, and woe, by the Kaaba 366, the radiant! Contemplate her beauty when she, the possessor of spiritual state, appears in the black garment. Cling to her hem this year to attain the luminous night, and you will see that station and ascend to the pinnacle of honor among the people of purity. In the valley of Mina you will spend the night and fulfill every desire at the stoning of the pillars. Even if I remain captive in her hands, bound by the chains of love and the humiliation of rejection, I have no sincere friend except the praise of the best of creation, the seal of the prophets, the manifest in purity, the master of the elect, the most excellent of messengers truly, and of all the earth's inhabitants, and the best of the heavens' inhabitants. To him from me be greetings and blessings every day, morning and evening. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees in those goodly places, regions, and courtyards, and witnesses his night vigil in remembrance of his Lord at dawn and evening, he says: "This, by Allah, is the fountain of effusions, gifts, and breezes, and the rising place of shining lights, illuminations, and glories, and the locus of compassion and kindness, and the eye of affections and mercies, and the intercessor for sinners and transgressors, and the remover of distress and crises." My master and my lord, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and upon his family). O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, Your beloved, whom when the beholder sees in those splendid places of construction and walls, and witnesses his lights shining upon those joyful houses of doors and chambers, he says: "This, by Allah, is the bride of lofty stations and the orator of the divine presences, and the forgiving pardoner of slips, and the one who overlooks stumbles, and the intercessor who saves creatures from the depth of misery and the heat of groans." My master and my lord, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and upon his family). So bless him, O Allah, and his noble, eminent family, and his Companions of enlightened hearts and purified bodies, a blessing by which You relieve us of all distress and regrets, and suffice us thereby from the evil of whisperings that lead to ingratitude for blessings and all passing thoughts, by Your favor and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. By Allah, O Sa'd, turn between the tents and stop ❖ happily, for my heart today is stolen And incline to the fragrant branches of Iḍam ❖ for how often at its bent twigs have sorrows stirred And if you see the bride of beauty appearing ❖ and her company wrapped in the cloak of union She manifests to her lovers without her veil ❖ in a garment that has no likeness or representation Hasten to her radiant countenance, kissing ❖ and kiss the mole upon her, for it is accepted And cling to her hems like one seeking refuge, and say ❖ "A poor slave, at the door he is an intruder" And scatter your tears from the spout of her eye ❖ in the sanctuary, for favor from His grace is bestowed Woe to your heart, for you have entered a sacred precinct ❖ and fear not, for upon you the veil is lowered Return to Zamzam water to be healed, for its spring ❖ is food of taste for whoever comes to it, eaten And water your heart and drink from its watering place ❖ for therein for the thirsty arrival is a way And ascend al-Safa, making wide from it toward al-Marwa ❖ seven times, while you are occupied with the remembrance of Allah When will my stay in the sanctuary be pleasant, and I see ❖ at the green milestone an eye that is kohl-lined? And I seek refuge with the best of creation, whom witnessed ❖ the abundant signs and revelation of his virtue Muhammad, Ahmad, the eraser by his law ❖ of misguidance, while the wing of disbelief is lowered Ṭā Hā, the trustworthy, brought the religion; its signs ❖ are the Seven Mathānī, and from him the elephant shrank The essence of creation, the light of truth, his creed ❖ its syntax in him is clarification and facilitation Cheerful, noble of countenance, O moon of his face ❖ nothing of exquisite beauty is missing from him In him are harmonized the attributes of perfection, so ask ❖ whoever you wish, for he is trustworthy and hoped for O Allah, I ask You, O my Lord, by the sanctity of Your Sacred House and its noble sites and great landmarks, and its station which You made a secure sanctuary for whoever enters it through the passage of nights and days, and a Ka'ba for those who circumambulate and a means for the expiation of sins, errors, and offenses, and by al-Safa and al-Marwa, which You made the running between them a guide to the path of happiness and a herald of attaining the goal and achieving the aim, and by the Most Fortunate Stone, the Yemeni Corner, the Multazam, the Spout of Mercy, al-Hatim, Zamzam, and the Sacred Monument, and by the sanctity of Your beloved, our master Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), whom You chose from among all Your servants and selected, and brought near to You and elected, and by Your oath by his life, with which You honored him over all the prophets and messengers, and in Your Book You revealed it, and by the status of his high, glorious rank, and his magnificent, splendid station, and his blessed places that were singled out for lordship and preference, and were regarded with the eye of veneration, glorification, and exaltation, and were filled with the secrets of prophethood and the jewels of revelation and sending down, and which the noble angels visited and the trustworthy Jibril frequented, that You bestow upon him a visit for one whose mind has wandered due to missing the sight of his face and his eyes, and whose heart has roamed in the beauties of his perfections and the greatness of his status and measure, and whose tongue has been occupied with his Ahmadine remembrance in his night and day, and who has made blessings upon him his constant habit and custom in his state of wealth and poverty, and his need, and the proclamation of the loftiness of his rank his condition in his going forth and returning, and seeking blessing through his Muhammadan name the secret of the opening of his beginning and his end and the translation of his writing and his lines, and his noble praise the support of his structure in his fasting and breaking fast, and his perpetual practice in his sleep and wakefulness, and his evening and morning, while obstacles have cut him off from reaching him, and his eye has not enjoyed his illuminated lands, his great sites, and his traces. So I ask You, O Allah, by his right upon You, to make my heart inhabited with love for him, and my breast joyful and delighted with what it utters of his prophetic praises, and the core of my heart molded and created upon belief in what he brought, and grant me, O Allah, my share of his intercession, and help me to perform service and obedience to him, and make me among the people of
his party and his authority, and whoever is guided to the vision of his illuminated shrine and his visitation, and raise me with him to the highest companion, and gather me with him in the Garden of Paradise, and give me to drink from the delicious nectar of his Kawthar 368, the sweetest, and grant me the fullest portion from the measure of his complete and most perfect love, and pour upon my heart the cups of the pure and pleasant wine of his drink, and make me among those who have knelt their mounts in the courtyards of his noble chambers before death, and quenched their thirst by kissing his pure soil and have been healed by the collyrium of his vision, and grant me from Your pleasure and his pleasure what I have asked and beyond what I have asked, and bring me near to You in proximity, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. (191) My heart is captive to the abode of the departing ones; it stays upon their traces and journeys. My tears are abundant in their courtyards, so how can I withhold tears when they are abundant? Even if my yearning for them and my passion vie with me, they have a going and coming in my innermost being. I long when the doves of their valley sing, and my heart pulls towards them and flies. I remember from Najd 369 the maidens with their intimacy, so my longing towards them intensifies and rages. Would that I knew about the eye sockets of Hajir 370 and about the fresh meadows of their gardens, and about the tender branches of the ban tree 371 playing in the forenoon, with cups of the breeze circling over them. Who will grant me a drink from the valley, and to see that land when it is rained upon, and to hear on the slope of the bisham tree 372 in the evening the cooing of doves? O neighbors of the Yemeni valley, by your right, keep the connection or send the phantom of imagination to visit. I am jealous of you lest my enviers see you, and I hide you from them, for the lover is jealous. Beloveds of my heart, other than you perhaps a physician skilled in the disease of lovers. You have planted in my heart a burning whose fruits are sorrows that set the core of my innermost being ablaze. The armies of your love every glance of an eye assault the fortress of my heart with passion. So lend my eyes a glance of your beauty, for not everyone who seeks union is granted. A watcher has settled over my heart, my hearing, and my sight, so no secret is hidden from him. (192) My desire is your love, so humiliation is honor for the sake of your love, and difficulty is easy. Restore to my religion and my world a blessing, so that sorrows turn into joy. My heart takes intoxication at your remembrance, as a lover rejoices in his wine. And I am indeed independent of the universe without you, but towards you, my masters, I am poor. I fast from others completely, and your remembrance is the pre-dawn meal for my fast in love and the breaking of the fast. The Night of Power 373 is a night I spend in intimacy with you, and no pen of acceptance is blind. The sobriety of the Feast 374 on the day I sacrifice by your proximity, upon me are veils of hidden kindness. So bestow union, for time separates, and most of the lives of lovers are short. Do not close the doors to me for my slip, for you are generous, and the generous is forgiving. Sins have weighed heavily on my back, but my hope in the Forgiver of sins is great. The rank of the Messenger of God is my most beautiful support when I have no helper in calamities. Praise of the Messenger of God, he said, is my happiness; I win by it on the day when the heaven sways. A pious, fragrant, refined prophet, a bringer of good tidings and a warner to all the worlds. When he is mentioned, hearts rejoice at his mention, and souls become good and breasts expand. It is forbidden for the world to have his like; indeed, a like is rare and precious. How can one rival the best of those who trod the earth, when every measure falls short of his sublimity? (193) Every noble one is humble before him, and every great one from the two Qarinas 375 is insignificant. If in his right hand the pebbles glorified [God], then water gushed forth abundant for the armies. A wolf, a lizard, a gazelle, and a hidden limb, its poison, and a camel spoke to him. Indeed, the Messenger of God journeyed by night from Mecca to the Throne, and the Trustworthy Spirit 376 was his companion. He traversed the seven heavens in part of a night, and after the seventh he pondered where to go. A gleam from the Rafraf of Light 377 shone for him, a herald of light for the guiding herald. He witnessed every wonder above the Throne, and there was none but a visitor and a visited. The Beloved received the beloved, singled him out, honored him with proximity, and he was worthy. He said to him: Ask Me for your pleasure, for I am over all things in your pleasure powerful. So he returned with a cool eye in the robe of pleasure, encompassed by joy and delight. Muhammad, raise me in difficulties, for I have a trade of praise that will not perish with you. Brides who are not pleased with any opener but you, their dowries are from the Gardens. So say: You are in both abodes in our party, and whoever follows you, young or old. And may God bless you as long as He distinguishes and chooses, for you are guidance and light for the worlds. (194)
