The dhikr [1] of the heart is the secret of the soul, and the dhikr of the soul is the secret of the spirit, and the dhikr of the spirit is the secret of the innermost being [2], and the dhikr of the innermost being is the secret of the essence [3].
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. And may Allah bless our master and lord Muhammad, his family, and his companions and grant them abundant peace. Praise be to Allah, the Opener 1, the All-Knowing, the Guide to the straight path. And blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad, the Chosen, the Trustworthy, and upon his family and his companions, possessors of glory and veneration. To proceed: When I examined the image of the encompassing ocean 2 and what it contains of streams, rivers, villages, cities, land, meadows, islands, climes, and countries, and what inhabits that of animals and various things, and the kinds of beautiful things and subtle pleasing matters, I roamed with the eye of my thought over its breadth, length, deficiency, justice, and strength, and I found it in relation to other created things like a small ant on a vast land—and dominion belongs to Allah, the One, the Subduer, the Creator of night and day. "His Kursi 3 extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not weary Him, and He is the Most High, the Magnificent." 4 Neither My earth nor My heavens contain Me, but the heart of My believing servant contains Me. 5 Say, "If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted." 6 To Him belongs creation and command. Blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds. When I saw that, my soul yearned to draw an image of a sea whose wonders cannot be counted nor its marvels enumerated, which encompasses everything and cannot be grasped, in whose depths the ships of the near ones 7 drown, and which no finite understanding of servants can cross. The talisman 8 shared with the seas, and between them in the confluence: "He has let loose the two seas, they meet; between them is a barrier they do not transgress." 9 And the two seas are not alike: this is fresh, sweet, pleasant to drink, and this is salty, bitter. 10 The sea of the eye of reality 11 and the sign of His creatures, the human eye of existence 12, and the cause of every existent—our master Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and his glory, honor, and generosity. I delighted my sight in the beauties of his gentle form, and I consoled my heart with the likeness of the sea of his noble generosity, and I made it my gaze in my night and day, and the drink of my love in my coming and going, because lovers are revived by the mention of their beloved, and hearts fly at the sight of their sought one. * Majnun 13 saw a dog in the desert * and bestowed upon it a garment of kindness. * They blamed him for what he did * and said, "Why do you give a garment to a dog?" * He said, "Leave off blaming me, for my eye * saw it once in Layla's lap." And I surrounded it with trees whose roots are firm in the land of hearts and whose branches are in the heaven of the unseen, "giving its fruit at every season by the leave of its Lord." 14 The knowers 15 pluck its secret fruits, and the lovers cling to its branches. It bears the traces of the breaths 16 and flourishes at the blowing of the fertilizing winds of blessings. It is watered with one water, and some of it excels others in fruit. And I made streams and rivers flow, at the sight of which eyes are bewildered, from the overflow of that great sea of pre-eternal precedence, to seas of knowledge on its two banks, whose people sip what oozes from the overflow of his knowledge, emulating the saying of al-Busiri 17, may Allah be pleased with him: "And the Messenger of Allah was sought, a scoop from the sea or a sip from the rain." And his saying: "He is the sea, and mankind is illuminated." And behind that I place meadows for the solitary ones 18 and leaders of the perfect ones, who draw from the praise of those chosen ones. They are given to drink of a sealed nectar, whose seal is musk—and for that let the competitors compete. 19 One like Layla kills himself, and the sweetness of death appears to him and becomes pleasant. And this is the description of the streams and rivers and the pouring aid from the Presence 20, and the leaves, trees, and branches laden with various fruits and kinds of security and its paths connected to the special qualities of His good beloved ones. "And those who strive for Us—We will surely guide them to Our ways." 21 "No, We relate to you from the stories of the messengers that by which We strengthen your heart." 22 "And there has come to you in this the truth and an admonition and a reminder for the believers." 23 "And you have not been given of knowledge except a little." 24 As for the sea of His greatest secret, understandings do not traverse it, nor do fancies grasp it. "Knower of the unseen, He does not disclose His unseen to anyone, except whom He has approved of messengers." 25 "And to your Lord is the finality." 26 And this tree grew from the womb of the flood of love; none plucks it except one who follows his sunna 27 and loves him. And this is the description of the necklace of the saints 28, the religious one between the secret of those (1) or a friend adorned with the ornament of the elite, or a lover buried in the cemetery of annihilation, or a passionate one revived by the breeze of the coolness of praise. So one foot advanced and the other lagged. And it is little—and Allah is the one whose help is sought. From Him I seek aid, and upon Him is reliance. And what He wills is. And when He wills a thing, He subjugates the pillars for it, directs the spiritual energy 29 for it, and opens the gardens for it. And my success is only from Allah. Upon Him I rely, and to Him I turn. Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance. And send down for us from the gifts of Your ladunni 30 sciences a supply. His saying: "Whoever draws from the galaxy of the gathering 31"—that is, whoever scoops from the sea of the Sharia 32 and the Reality 33—he writes what was of the jewels of the intellectual and transmitted sciences, and what is not of the subtle sciences and the ladunni gifts. And if you wish, you may say: "Whoever draws from the repository of the gathering"—and it is the point of the guarded secret and the hidden knowledge—he writes what was of the meanings of the Names and Attributes, and what is not in the tablets of intimations and inspirations. And if you wish, you may say: "Whoever draws from the repository of the gathering"—and it is the light of insight and the mirror of the innermost secret—he writes what was in the abridged and extended works, and what is not in the summary and ambiguous ones. And if you wish, you may say: "Whoever draws from the repository of the gathering"—and it is the lamp of the niche of lights and the glass of secrets—he writes what was in the tablets of truth and constancy, and what is not of the unseen matters and future events, by the witness of Allah, the Light of the heavens and the earth: "Like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly star, kindled from a blessed tree, an olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if no fire touched it. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills." 34
So glory be to Him who split open the compactness of meanings for those with insight 35, and disclosed to them the hidden secrets of innermost hearts and consciences. Indeed, to Him belongs creation and command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds, Knower of the unseen, so He does not reveal His unseen to anyone except whom He chooses of a messenger. And if you wish, you may say: When the light of majesty and beauty took possession of this saint's 36 inner being, and his worlds dissolved in the attributes of splendor and perfection, he trembled in awe and fell down in a swoon, as witnessed: "When his Lord manifested to the mountain, He made it crumble" 37. Then when he recovered from his annihilation and returned to the witness of his sobriety 38, the space of divulging secrets became too narrow for him, and he breathed in the isthmus 39 of the carpet of lights, saying: "Glory be to Him who was before everything, who brings everything into being, and who remains after everything. Allah existed when there was nothing with Him, and He is now as He ever was. I have turned to You, and I am the first of the believers." When the witness of his secret heard: "Indeed, I have chosen you" 40, he said: "He who draws from the inkwell of union 41 writes what was and what will never be." Long is what shines upon the inner from the lights of gnosis, and what appears on the limbs from the witnesses of grace. Long is what I describe to you of the gifts of the Merciful and mention from what ears have heard. Long is what you infer by proof and demonstration, and fortify with piercing intellects. He is the Possessor of length; there is no god but He; to Him is the return. Short is: "If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as replenishment" 42. Short is: "And if whatever trees on earth were pens, and the sea [were ink], with seven more seas to replenish it, the words of Allah would not be exhausted" 43. Short is: "What you have will perish, but what is with Allah will remain" 44. And if you count the blessings of Allah, you cannot enumerate them. "Thing" 45—say: "What thing is greatest in testimony?" Say: "Allah." "Thing"—"There is not a thing but glorifies His praise" 46. "Thing"—"And there is not a thing but with Us are its treasuries" 47. So glory be to Him who encompasses everything in knowledge and counts everything in number. "I was a hidden treasure and I loved to be known, so I created creation that they might know Me" 48. "Thing"—"Say: 'Allah,' then leave them to play in their vain discourse" 49. "Thing"—"Wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah" 50. "Thing"—"Verily, everything besides Allah is false" 51. "My earth and My heavens do not contain Me" 52. O Allah, forgive me, O He whose name is blessed and whose praise is exalted; forgive me, O He whose majesty is high and whose names are sanctified; forgive me, O He who is eternal in His existence; forgive me, O He whose abode is established in elevation; forgive me, O He who is covered with the splendor of Majesty and Beauty; forgive me, O He who has donned praise and glory as a garment; forgive me, O He who is magnified by grandeur and light, which befits none other than Him; forgive me, O He whose work and creation are exalted in the heavens and among creation; forgive me, O He who is veiled by His veil, so no eye sees Him; forgive me, O He whose greatness and ultimate end the describers cannot comprehend; forgive me, O He who created the servants by the power of His decree; forgive me, O He who deserves gratitude from the servants for what He has bestowed upon them; forgive me, O He who by His mercy turned to Adam and guided him; forgive me, O He who saved Noah in the ark made by His hands; forgive me, O He who raised Idris to a high station and chose him; forgive me, O All-Hearing, O Answerer (11), O Kind to whom He wills, and have mercy on me, hear from me, favor me, answer my prayer, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, my seeking forgiveness with my persistence does not protect me, and my excuse with Your warning does not benefit me, and my denial with bearing my burdens does not prevent me, and my sin with the vastness of Your forbearance does not make me despair. You show affection to me with blessings, while I show aversion to You with sins, despite my need for You. O He who, when He promises, fulfills, and when He threatens, pardons, include my great offense in Your great pardon, place me under the wing of Your hidden kindness, pardon me by Your grace, treat me with Your generosity and bounty, revive my heart with the light of knowledge of You and Your oneness, make me among the thankful for Your blessing, the mindful of Your beneficence, and protect me, O Allah, from the evil of my soul and the evil of every evil-doer among Your creation, do not destroy me with Your wrath, do not try me with Your punishment, grant me well-being before that, guide me to the best of paths, and protect me from the trial of the grave and all perils. O Allah, accept the prayer of whoever calls upon You, then hopes for the removal of his affliction from none but You, have mercy on us with Your mercy, bestow upon us Your pardon, do not turn us back disappointed, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Praise be to Allah, who has guided us to this, and we would not have been guided unless Allah had guided us.
Praise be to God, who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light; yet those who disbelieve equate others with their Lord. He it is who created you from clay, then decreed a term, and a specified term is with Him; yet you doubt. And He is God in the heavens and on the earth; He knows your secret and your open, and He knows what you earn. Praise be to God, who has not taken a son, and has no partner in sovereignty, and has no protector from weakness; and magnify Him with magnification. Praise be to God, who sent down the Book to His servant and did not make it crooked, upright, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good news to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward in it forever. Praise be to God, to whom belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and to Him belongs praise in the Hereafter; and He is the Wise, the Aware. He knows what enters the earth and what comes out of it, and what descends from the sky and what ascends into it; and He is the Merciful, the Forgiving. Victory from God and a near conquest; and give good news to the believers. So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted; and that is the great triumph. Indeed, God and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet; O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with a greeting of peace. O God, send blessings upon our master Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Abraham, and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Abraham and the family of Abraham in the worlds; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O God, send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, the pinnacle of glory whose limit cannot be reached, the rising star of fortune whose beginning heralded signs of good, the ocean of sciences whose depth and end are unknown. O God, send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, the pearl of the necklace whose attributes are unmatched, the ultimate goal that has no end, the path of guidance whose miracles are countless, the locus of piety and asceticism; whoever visits him, his need is fulfilled and his supplications are answered. May God bless him and his family as long as the morning and evening continue. May God bless him and his family as long as movements and stillness of determination endure. May God bless him and his family with a blessing that has no limit, no end, no command, and no termination; and peace be upon him and the mercy of God and His blessings. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the fruit of the tree of repentance 110; whoever clings to it, Allah makes him among the chosen and the righteous. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the branch of the tree of repentance; whoever clings to it, Allah whitens his face and grants him the rank of the righteous 111. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the house of the tree of repentance; whoever clings to it, Allah rectifies his religion and establishes his crumbling foundation upon truth. (33) O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the fruit of the tree of beauty 112; whoever clings to it, he becomes absorbed in the essence of His surpassing beauty. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the branch of the tree of beauty; whoever holds fast to it, he becomes enraptured by the splendor of his rising full moon. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ruby of the tree of beauty; whoever holds fast to it, he attains more than what the women who cut their hands without distinction 115 attained. (34) O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the fruit of the tree of love; its oil shines with the light of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the branch of the tree of love; its return flows from the gifts of the secret of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the blossom of the tree of love; its fragrance is diffused from the gardens of the intimate knowledge 116 of Allah. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the root of the tree of love; its affection is embedded in natures. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the essence of the tree of love; its side is guarded from hypocrisy. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the house of the tree of love; its pearl is treasured in the shells of hearts. (35) And fill our hearts with Your love, and delight them with Your lights, and humble our souls before the authority of Your majesty, and do not entrust us to ourselves for the blink of an eye nor less than that, and rectify our entire affair, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the light of guidance and the secret of sainthood 117, the crown of care, the refuge of protection, the amulet of preservation, the point of beginning and the goal of the end, a blessing by which You protect us from the varieties of misguidance and error, and make us among the people of preservation and care. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the sun of spiritual sciences 118 and divine gifts 119, the spirit of the essence of every pious person and gnostic 120, a blessing by which You grant us the secrets of subtle favors 121, and make it a protection for us from terrors, earthquakes, and all fears. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing by which You make us among those whom You have clothed with the radiant light of Your love, raised for them the banners of guidance to union with You, established them in the station of champions for Your will, granted them the fulfillment of Your right, and made them a mercy to Your creation. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing by which You make us among those upon whom You have poured patience in opposing You, whose bodies have become manifest through vigilance over You 122, whom You have perfumed with the fragrance of the people of Your dealings 123, clothed them in garments woven from Your affection, seated them on the pulpits of proximity, and placed upon their heads the crowns of Your delight. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing by which You make us among those whose limbs You have prepared for Your service, whose inner beings You have filled with the secrets of Your wisdom, whose hearts You have filled with the lights of Your awe, so they cast off the garments of ease out of fear of You, and sacrificed themselves in striving and obedience to You, and loved the loss of status out of fear of Your might, and protected themselves from everything that brings them near Your wrath and leads them to disobedience to You. (36) O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing by which You make us among those who prepared for the Hereafter, folded up the carpet of frivolity, and denied their eyes the delight of sleep. Grief burned their thoughts, tears altered their eyesight, so they made their knees a pillow for their foreheads and the earth a bed for their sides. They are fearful, cautious, trembling, apprehensive, standing on the leg of seriousness, girded up. The Great Terror 124 does not grieve them, and the angels receive them: "This is your day which you were promised." O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing by which You make us among those whose flesh and blood have become intermixed with the Qur'an, so it separated them from spouses, awakened them from the sleep of heedlessness, and stirred them to travel by night 125. They placed it upon their hearts and found rest, pressed it to their chests and found expansion. They made it a lamp for their darkness, a clear path for their way, and a victorious argument for their proof. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing by which You make us among those who trod upon the laws of the Qur'an, attained purity through the pure offering 126, and were illuminated by the light of the All-Merciful. They had not long to wait before the Qur'an fulfilled its promise to them, completed its covenant with them, settled them in its felicities, and granted them safety from its threat. Thus they attained through it the desired things, embraced through it the stars, were secured through it from calamities, and praised through it the outcomes. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing by which You make us among those who parted from the delight of this world with a disdainful eye, looked to the reward of the Hereafter with a contented eye, and purchased the eternal with the ephemeral. How excellent is their trade! They profited in both abodes, gathered both goods, and completed both virtues. They reached the best of stations through the patience of a few days. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing by which You make us among those who hastened to good deeds and anticipated while there was respite, fearing the accidents of hours, and did not waste their days in frivolity and pleasures, being occupied (37) with what concerns them, traversing the paths of salvation. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing...
Make us thereby among those who complied with the commands and avoided the prohibitions, and raised themselves above everything that leads them to sins and ambiguities, and immersed their times in worship and all acts of obedience. Fatigue weakened their strength, and exhaustion changed their colors, and they remembered a blazing fire 127. So attributes fall short of them, and melodies are raised by them, and blessings descend upon them. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those whom Allah adorned with beautiful attributes, and raised to the highest stations, and manifested through their hands the flashes of the secret 128 and the miraculous events 129. They are the highest of people in speech and taste, the most fulfilling of covenant and pledge, the lamp of servants, the beacon of lands, the lamps of darkness, the mines of mercy, the springs of wisdom, and the support of the community. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those whose sides forsake their beds 130, and whose remembrance adorns the ears, and through whom gatherings and assemblies are made pleasant. They looked to Allah's reward with yearning souls, gazing eyes, and conforming deeds. They are the most accepting of people with excuse, the most forgiving with pardon, the most generous with giving, and the best in dealing and fulfilling rights. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those who lowered their gazes from forbidden things, restrained their hands from various foods, and fled with themselves from sins. So they traversed the path of guidance, and prepared its foundation for right guidance. They are the lamps of darkness, the springs of the eyes of intellect 131, distinguished by the secret of special election 132, and purified from affectation by sincerity. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those who observe the times, preserve the prayers, and abandon the arenas of amusement and pleasures. They are fasting, standing in prayer, pious, ascetic, humble, submissive: "Indeed, the believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts tremble, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith, and upon their Lord they rely" 133. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among Your believing servants, those who are humble in their prayer, those who turn away from idle talk, those who are active in giving zakah 134, those who guard their private parts, those who keep their trusts and covenant, those who uphold their testimonies, and those who preserve their prayers. They will be in gardens, honored. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those whose desires in the hearts have diminished, due to fear of the consequences of sins, and whose souls have departed from greed, cautious of the standing before the Master of the arenas 135. They have emaciated their bodies from fear of those sorrows, and purified their hearts for Him by abandoning every food and drink. Their souls became tranquil, and they were content with poverty and hardship. They are like worn-out garments or faded traces. People sleep while they stay awake, and people break their fast while they fast. Those are the successful and secure ones, who fear their Lord above them and do what they are commanded. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those who fled to You, so You accepted them; they turned to You, so You loved them; they sought refuge with You, so You granted them refuge; they sought Your help, so You aided them; they sought Your succor, so You supported them; they knocked at Your door, so You answered them; they held fast to You, so You protected them; they ascribed themselves to You, so You adorned them among Your servants with their splendor; they flattered themselves before You, so You bestowed upon them Your favor and mercy; they fled to You, so You saved them from fears and gave them security. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those whom You saved from dangers and perils, and led them along the best paths, and illuminated their lamps in the darkness of the pitch-black night. They are the keys to the doors of generosity, the helpers of the religion, the protectors of the sanctuary, and those who possess the highest rank in the stations of might and eternity. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those who, when You look at them, Your anger subsides, Your reckoning becomes light, Your punishment is lifted, Your mercy overflows, Your forbearance spreads, and Your bounty and generosity encompass. They are Your intercession among Your servants, and Your mercy which You have spread across Your regions and lands. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those whom You seated on the pulpits of honor and lordship, crowned them with the crown of contentment, made them a locus of knowledge and benefit, guided them with Your light to You, led them on the path of happiness, extended the wing of Your covering over them, and promised them kindness from You in the beginning and the return. So they abandoned everything and did not turn to anyone besides You, O Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those whom the caller of truth called, so they hastened to His noble door, and isolated their hearts from creation, so He guided them to His straight path. They addressed Him with the tongue of truth, so He brought them near and purified them from every blameworthy attribute. They sincerely directed their intentions to Him and returned with sincere repentance and a sound heart. So He favored them and gave them glad tidings with His words: "O My servants, indeed I am the Forgiving, the Merciful" 136. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those who boarded the ships of fear, used the oars of obedience, and lowered the curtains of trust. Then the winds of longing blew upon them and cast them into the seas of knowledge 137. The waves of contentment swallowed them, and the garments of certainty carried them, so they became travelers until they disappeared from the eyes of onlookers. Then the angels received them with spirit and fragrance 138, saying: "O noble angels of Allah, is there a path?" And the angels say to them: "Rejoice, you have crossed it by five hundred years." O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among Your righteous servants and the elite of Your close friends 139, those who recite His verses during the hours of the night while prostrating, who believe in Allah and the Last Day, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and hasten to good deeds. And those are among the righteous. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us thereby among those for whom You opened the clear victory 140, and gave them the rank of honor and empowerment.
And You turned them within the circle of Your kingdom, so they established the laws and revived the landmarks of religion, and they held fast to You, so You sufficed them against the evil of the mockers. They placed themselves and their wealth in Your protection and Your secure sanctuary, and they sought victory through You, and they found You the best Helper and Supporter. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us among those who, when the darkness of night deepens, yearn for You as birds yearn for their nests, and rejoice in intimate conversation with You as souls rejoice with their visitors, and hasten to You as mounts hasten to their homelands. They are bewildered by Your remembrance and gentleness, warming themselves by the fire of longing. Love has burned their livers, and passion has worn out their bodies, so they have become absent in the beauty of the Essence 141, casting aside attachments and adorning themselves with beautiful attributes. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us among those whose souls have roamed in the heights and alighted in the watering-places of piety, until they halted in the meadows of bliss and plucked the fruits of the gentle breeze from the thickets, and traversed the deep sea of joy and drank from the cup of happiness, and sought shade under the canopy of generosity, and attained contentment in the abode of safety. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us among those who opened the door of patience and filled the trenches of anxiety and crossed the bridge of desire until they passed beyond the lands of the wrongdoers, and became desolate from the company of the ignorant, and mixed the fruit of action with the light of sincerity, and drew from the spring of wisdom, and boarded the ship of discernment, and set sail with the wind of certainty, and plunged into the sea of salvation, and anchored at the moorings of the brought-near 142 and the great ones of the elite. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us among those who laugh openly from the vastness of their Lord's mercy, and weep secretly from fear of the severity of their Lord's punishment. They remember Him morning and evening in their pure homes, and call upon Him in hope and fear with their gentle tongues, and ask Him with their hands lowered and raised, and yearn for Him with their hearts at dawn and at the start. They walk with tranquility and draw near through the means 143. They are His honored servants and His pious friends. Upon them are present witnesses from Him, and guarding eyes, and manifest blessings. Their souls are in this world, but their minds are in the Hereafter. So they are those who hasten to fulfill rights without delay, and fulfill obedience without deficiency. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us among those whom Allah has made happy through obedience to Him, and preserved through His care, and regarded with His attention, and taken charge of through His governance. So their mount to Him is desire, their driver is fear, their encourager is longing, and their path is taste 144. No languor in intention overtakes them, nor weakness in resolve, nor feebleness in determination, nor interpretation for a concession, nor inclination toward the temptations of heedlessness. Their concerns are in seriousness and seeking, and their souls are in salvation and flight. They consider much of their deeds as little, and consider little of Allah's blessings upon them as much. If He bestows blessings upon them, they are grateful; if they are denied, they are patient. They are a people whom Allah has made to taste the sweet flavor of His love, and has blessed them with the permanence of sweetness in intimate conversation with Him. So that has cut them off from desires, and they have avoided pleasures, and they remain in the service of the Lord of the heavens and the earth. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us among those whom You have honored with Your love and established at the door of contemplation 145 from Your proximity, and made them a locus for Your affection, and guides to the paths of Your right guidance, and trustees over the secrets of Your servants. Then You said to them: 'If a fearful one comes to you from Me, give him security; or a commander from Me, warn him; or one desiring My connection, connect him; or one journeying towards Me, provide for him; or one cowardly in My transaction, encourage him; or one despairing of My bounty, count him; or one hoping for My beneficence, give him glad tidings; or one of good opinion of Me, be open with him; or one loving Me, accompany him; or one magnifying My rank, magnify him; or one seeking clarification towards Me, guide him; or one doing evil after My beneficence, reproach him. And whoever connects with you, connect with him; and whoever is absent from you, seek him out; and whoever commits an offense against you, bear with him; and whoever falls short in an obligation regarding My right, leave him; and whoever commits a sin, advise him; and whoever among My friends is sick, visit him; and whoever is dying, give him glad tidings; and if a distressed person seeks refuge with you, grant him refuge. For through you are bestowed gifts, through you are achieved goals, through you are opened doors, through you arises the cloud, through you is lifted wrath, and through you is extinguished the blazing fire.' O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing that makes us among those whose hearts You have preserved from evils, and through whom You have shown mercy to Your servants in hardship and shelter, and seated them on the chairs of physicians of the people of Your knowledge regarding ailments and the examination of the sources of remedies. Then You said to them: 'If a sick one comes to you from poverty, treat him; or one ill from remembrance of Me, cure him; or one forgetful of My blessing, remind him; or one confronting Me with disobedience, oppose him; or one loving Me, connect with him. My reward for you is the best reward, My gift to you is the best gift, My bestowal upon you is the best bestowal, My favor upon you is the most abundant favor, My dealing with you is the most fulfilling dealing, and My demand upon you is the most severe demand. I am the Examiner of hearts, I am the Knower of unseen things, and I am the Knower of the realms of thought and the whisperings of breasts.' You and all the inhabitants of Your earth and Your heaven and what is between them and what is encompassed by above and below and before and after, with all kinds of Your complete and accepted blessings, and You send peace with all kinds of Your peace that is connected to You, upon the absolute master, and the one sent to complete the noble traits of character, Your servant and messenger upon whom You revealed in the clear verses of Your Book: 'And indeed, you are of a great moral character.' [Quran 68:4] O Allah, send blessings, peace, and benediction upon the eye of care, the treasure of guidance, the adornment of the Resurrection, the embroidery of the garment, the bride of the kingdom, the tongue of the proof, the intercessor of the community, the imam of the Divine Presence, the Prophet of Mercy, our master Muhammad, and upon Adam, Noah, Abraham the Friend, and upon his brother Moses the Converser, and upon the Spirit of God, Jesus the Trustworthy, and upon David and Solomon, Zechariah and John, and upon their families, whenever those who remember remember You, and whenever those who are heedless are heedless of Your remembrance. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, to the number of the vastness of Your mercy. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, to the number of Your forgiveness after Your power. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, to the number of Your forbearance after Your knowledge.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, as many as encompassed by Your knowledge 146 and counted by Your Book. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master and lord Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, as many as Your creation, the pleasure of Your Self, the weight of Your Throne, the ink of Your words, and the permanence of Your kingdom, and multiples of multiples thereof, a perpetual blessing with Your perpetuity, enduring with Your endurance, with no end without Your knowledge; indeed, You are over all things competent. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his wives and his offspring as You blessed Abraham, and send blessings upon Muhammad and his wives and his offspring as You sent blessings upon Abraham; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family as You blessed Abraham, and send blessings upon our master Muhammad and the family of our master Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Abraham and the family of Abraham in the worlds; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad, the unlettered prophet, and the family of Muhammad. O Allah, bless Muhammad, Your servant and Your messenger. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Abraham and the family of Abraham; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Abraham and the family of Abraham; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, have mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You had mercy upon Abraham 147. Thus she became joyful with happiness and glad tidings; You honored him with the distance of two bow-lengths 148, You honored him with Your speech free from doubt and Your grace sanctified from uncertainty and defect; You bestowed upon him from Yourself, and thus You disclosed to him the hidden secrets of the cosmos and all mysteries. Grant us the companionship of fear, the dominance of longing, the steadfastness of knowledge, the constancy of reflection, and bestow upon us purity of gnosis and rectitude of conduct between us and You according to the Sunna; grant us sincerity of trust in You and good opinion of You, and favor us with everything that brings us near to You, coupled with pardon in both abodes, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, O He who looked with His selection upon the elite of His servants and made their hearts houses of His oneness, their innermost selves a dwelling for His uniqueness, and their breasts sources of His remembrance and glorification; so everything that rises for them from the horizon of divine success, or flashes for them from the lightning bolts of realization, the hearts expand with the remembrance of the Beloved, and the drink becomes pleasant for them, and the unseen is unveiled for them. Through You to You, establish us in sincerity of servitude before You, make our tongues moist with Your remembrance, our souls obedient to Your command, our hearts filled with Your gnosis, our spirits honored with Your contemplation 149, our innermost selves delighted with Your nearness; indeed, You are over all things competent. O You who humbles the hearts of the gnostics, O You who subdues the awe of the yearning ones, by Your pardon and generosity, bestow upon us Your favor, clothe us with the garment of Your concealment, pardon us for our shortcomings by Your generosity, grant us gratitude for Your blessings and kindness, and admit us into Paradise by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. You raised him to the noblest station and the highest rank, and made him a guide to the religion of Islam and a guide to the Abode of Peace. O Allah, just as You commanded us to send blessings upon him, convey our blessings to him, O Lord of the worlds. Place us in his company, make us among those who attain his intercession, follow his law, are guided by his Sunna, and emulate his Companions. Show us his face, deprive us not of his intercession, and gather us with him in the abode of mercy and good pleasure, to the Abode of Peace, by Your mercy, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor 150. Have mercy upon a servant overwhelmed by calamities, whose proofs are hidden, whom hope and fleeting worldly goods have deceived, so that a barrier has veiled him from You until most of his life has passed in idleness, and he has attained nothing of value. O Allah, I ask You and turn to You through our master Muhammad, Your servant and Your messenger, the sweet of character, whom You chose from the noblest tribes, in whom You gathered diverse qualities, and preferred him over the later and earlier generations. Deliver us, O our Lord, from every great matter and terrible affair, heal us from apparent and hidden diseases and all ailments. O Muhammad, Seal of the Prophets, Confirmer of the Messengers, and Messenger of the Lord of the worlds, intercede for me with your Lord for the fulfillment of all my needs, bestow upon me the subtle favors and goodness, and honor me with all virtues. O Allah, I seek intercession through him to You, through Your generosity and his generosity to Your generosity, through his mercy to Your mercy, and through the people of his love to You. I ask You by every request that any of Your creation has asked of You, a swift request not rejected, and by every supplication made to You, an answered supplication not disappointed, to clothe us in the garments of the righteous, crown us with the crown of honor, awe, and dignity, grant us the secret of secrets that prevents persistence [in sin], so that 151 we may have no rest with sin, and establish us and guide us to righteous deeds through these words which You spread upon the tongue of Your messenger and with which You tested Abraham, Your friend, and he fulfilled them: "He said, 'Indeed, I will make you a leader for the people.' [Abraham] said, 'And of my descendants?' [Allah] said, 'My covenant does not include the wrongdoers.'" So make us among the doers of good from the descendants of Adam and Noah, and cause us to follow the path of the righteous leaders, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. And cast, O Mighty, O Loving, upon me love from You, by which the necks of Your servants will be led and submit to me, with love and affection and honor, from the tenderness of harmony. "They love them as they love Allah. But those who believe are more intense in love for Allah" 302. Manifest upon me, O Manifest, O Hidden, the traces of the secrets of lights. "He loves them and they love Him, humble towards the believers, mighty against the disbelievers, striving in the way of Allah and not fearing the blame of any blamer. That is the bounty of Allah" 303. And direct, O Allah, O Eternal, O Light, my face with the attribute of the perfection of intimacy of radiance. "So if they argue with you, say, 'I have submitted my face to Allah'" 304. And make me, O Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor, with eloquence, brilliance, and rhetoric. "And untie the knot from my tongue that they may understand my speech" 305. With compassion of mercy, tenderness. "Then their skins and their hearts soften to the remembrance of Allah" 306. Gird me, O Severe in assault, O Compeller, with the sword of guardianship, strength, severity, and invincibility from the might of the dominion of glory. "And victory is only from Allah" 307. Continue upon me, O Expander, O Opener, the delight of joy. "My Lord, expand for me my breast and ease for me my task" 308. With the subtleties of affections. "Did We not expand for you your breast?" 309. Glad tidings of treasures. "On that day the believers will rejoice in the victory of Allah" 310.
And send down, O Allah, O Gentle One, O Compassionate, into my heart faith, submission, tranquility, and serenity, so that I may be among those who believe and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah 311. Pour upon me, O Patient One, O Appreciative One, patience, and make me among those who sowed the full moon of certainty 312, as many a small company has overcome a large company by the permission of Allah 313. Protect me, O Guardian, O Trustee, from before me and behind me, on my right and on my left, and from above me and beneath me, with a witnessing presence 314, for each person has guardian angels before him and behind him, protecting him by Allah's command 315. And make firm, O Allah, make firm my heart and my foot, as You made firm the one who said: How should I fear what you associate [with Allah] when you do not fear that you have associated with Allah 316? Grant me victory, O Excellent Patron and Excellent Helper, over the enemies, the victory of the one to whom it was said: Do you take us in mockery? He said: I seek refuge in Allah 317. Support me, O Seeker, O Victorious, with the support of Your Prophet, our master Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace 318, who was supported with strengthening, for We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of good news, and a warner, that you may believe in Allah 319. And suffice me, O Sufficing One, O Healer of ailments and evils, with benefits, for had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and split asunder from fear of Allah 320. And bestow upon me, O Bestower, O Provider, with attainment, acquisition, acceptance, subjugation, and facilitation, eat and drink from the provision of Allah 321. And take me as Your protégé, O Protecting Friend, with guardianship, care, protection, and safety, with an increase of supply, happiness, and support, and that is among the signs of Allah 322. And honor me, O Generous One, O Self-Sufficient One, with happiness, leadership, nobility, and forgiveness, as You honored those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah 323. Turn to me in repentance, O Acceptor of Repentance, O Wise One, with sincere repentance, so that I may be among those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins, and who forgives sins except Allah 324? And realize my faith, O Exalted One, O Magnificent One, by the right of the majesty of Your Greatest Name 325, the realization of those to whom the people said: Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them. But it increased them in faith, and they said: Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee. So they returned with grace and bounty from Allah, no harm having touched them, and they pursued the pleasure of Allah 326. And pour upon my heart, O Turner of hearts, from the water of the sky of success 327 for the satisfaction of acts of obedience in the hours of the night and the ends of the day, with the existence of the generosity of Your absolute favor, for all eternity, a success that raises the determination of uprightness, for what is there for the helpless like me to reform his soul except the saying: My success is only from Allah 328. And guide me, O Guide, to the straight path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, of the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous, and excellent are those as companions, and the favor is from Allah. Say: Indeed, the guidance is the guidance of Allah 329. And extend my will from Your will with the good of the Owner, in whose hand are the keys of hearts 330, with the realization, precision, and affirmation of the success of those immersed in Your pure love for Your noble face, for by the rein of my contingent power in the hand of Your eternal good will to lead me to the eye of correctness, for I am devoid of power and strength, holding fast to Your saying: And you do not will except that Allah wills 331. Seal for me, O Most Merciful, O Compassionate, with a good end of the saved, to whom it was said: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah 332. And cause me to dwell, O All-Hearing, O Near One, in gardens of perpetual residence prepared for the righteous, and their greeting therein is peace 333. O Allah, and their greeting therein is peace, and the last of their call is: Praise be to Allah 334. O Opener, O Most Merciful, O Compassionate, by the sanctity of these names, verses, and words, grant me a victorious authority, a contented heart, abundant provision, copious knowledge, illuminating understanding, an easy reckoning, and great dominion in both abodes. And may Allah bless our master and patron Muhammad and his family and companions and grant them peace abundantly. O One who precedes every loss, O Clother of bones with flesh and Resurrector of them after death, by Your great names, by Your Greatest and Most Great Name, the hidden and treasured one that no creature has ever come to know, or cast upon me from Your adornment and love and from the attributes of Your lordship that dazzle minds, to which souls submit, necks bow, eyes sparkle, thoughts scatter, and every arrogant tyrant humbles himself. O Allah, O King, O Mighty, O Compeller, O Allah, O One, O Unique, O Subduer, by Your eye that never sleeps, suffice us with Your protection that is never violated, have mercy on us by Your power over us, do not destroy us while You are our hope. How many a favor have You bestowed upon me for which my gratitude was little, how many a trial have You tested me with for which my patience was little. O He whose favor I have little thanked yet He did not deprive me, O He in whose trial I have little patience yet He did not forsake me, O He who saw me upon sins yet did not disgrace me, that You send blessings and peace upon our master and patron Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, as You sent blessings, mercy, and blessings upon Abraham and upon the family of Abraham; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, You have indeed made gray hair sacred and Islam a covenant. You are the One who manifests beauty and conceals ugliness. Do not take us to task for sin; indeed You are the Living, the Generous, who accepts excuses. Nothing of our sins, great or small, is hidden from You. From Imam al-Shafi‘i 383, may Allah be pleased with him, as a sound, transmitted hadith from al-Mughira, from Your beloved, the truthful and confirmed, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the luminous sun of prophethood, from You, O Lord of Might, that You forgive a thousand major sins for a single excuse, and that You are too shy to punish a gray hair that has grown gray in Islam. So accept, O Allah, my excuse, and free my gray hair. By the sanctity of the gray hair of our master Abu Bakr al-Siddiq 384, the pure and pious, and by the sanctity of the gray hair of our master ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab 385 and his renowned virtues, and by the sanctity of the gray hair of our master ‘Uthman 386, the modest, and his beloved merits, and by the sanctity of the gray hair of our master ‘Ali 387, the chosen, and his momentous excellences, be pleased with them with Your greatest pleasure, beside which every reward vanishes and their recompense is deemed insignificant. And [be pleased] with us and the community of Islam, through our master and prophet and lord Muhammad, upon him be blessings and peace, through Your bounty and generosity, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor, with the best, most complete, and most comprehensive reward with which You have rewarded any of the companions of the messengers. Be pleased with Your chosen ones and the best of Your creation, whose hearts You made treasuries of Your books and whom You veiled with Your mercy, and whom You made a security among Your servants; when You look at them, the forgiveness of the sins of the sinners becomes easy for You due to their honor with You. Be pleased with all Your righteous servants. Be pleased with us and our loving brothers through their pleasure, O Most Generous of the generous, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, a blessing by which You bring me out of the darkness of illusion and honor me with the light of understanding, and clarify for me what is difficult until it is understood. The earths were adorned with rain, and the branches were decorated with flowers. A pilgrim performed Hajj and Umrah 393, and said Labbayk 394, and shaved, and sacrificed. One stood at Arafat 395 and departed, and circumambulated the Ancient House 396 and kissed the Black Stone 397. He stoned the pillars at Muhassab 398 and aimed and said Allahu Akbar 399. He remembered Allah at the Sacred Monument 400, a rememberer, and sought forgiveness. O possessor of the purest heart, the greatest piety, the most dazzling beauty, and the ecstasy—O my master, O Messenger of Allah, your marked cloak, your most magnificent embroidery, your most ancient predecessor, your most upright path—the mirror of the Essence, the named of names and attributes, the descent of the lights of the Omnipotent 401, the abode of the secrets of the Angelic 402, the gathering of the realities of the Divine 403, the source of the subtleties of the Ark 404, the one who breathes the spirit of good for him, the giver through the secret of the measure, the one who appears through the force of seclusion, the one who inclines through the gathering of the secret—his heart is the Throne of the Mercy of the Essence, the Footstool 405 of names and attributes, the ultimate of initiatives, the canopy of the bed of mysteries, the matter of matter and natures, the dark sphere of divinities, the belt of the constellations of the zenith of lordships, the heavens of the pride of transcendence and ascents, the sun of knowledge and the beginning, the full moon of perfection and the end, the star of election and guidance, the fire of the heat of will, the water of the life of the unseen and the witnessed, the wind of the east breeze of guidance, the breath of mercy and lordship, the clay of the earth and indication and servitude, possessor of the Seven Oft-Repeated 406, owner of the second keys, manifestation of perfection, requirement of majesty and beauty—that You make us among those qualified for care to the path of guidance, those intended for the benefits of creation, those raised for initiative and mediation, those supported by empowerment, those made happy by the firm foundations of certain knowledge, those for whom You unveiled the obscure landmarks of religion and opened for them the understanding of the Clear Book 407. So let them convey, through what You have bestowed upon them of Your grace and found in them of Your great command, the perfection of what they were commanded and the haste to what they were summoned. Grant us, O Allah, Your awe and reverence, Your magnification, Your companionship, good fortune, haste, and initiative to every word...
And a pure and praiseworthy deed that pleases You. Grant us, O Allah, what You have granted to Your chosen ones and Your saints 408, the people of Your obedience and Your beloved, of perpetual remembrance of You and sincere action for Your sake, in the most perfect, enduring, purest, and most beloved state to You. Help us to act accordingly until the end of our term. And bless us, O Allah, in death when it descends upon us; make it a day of gift, honor, nearness 409, joy, and delight. Do not make it a day of regret or a day of sorrow. Bring us forth from our graves in joy, happiness, and delight of the eyes. Make them gardens from the gardens of Your Paradise, meadows from the meadows of Your honor, kindness, and mercy. Inspire us therein with proofs 410 and grant us security from terrors. Make us secure and tranquil until the day You resurrect us, O Gatherer of mankind for a day about which there is no doubt—there is no doubt about that day with us. Grant us security, O Allah, from its terrors, deliver us from its hardships, remove from us its great distress, quench our thirst from it, and gather us in the company of our master Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), with those upon whom You have bestowed favor: the prophets, the truthful 411, the martyrs, and the righteous.
