a sea whose wonders cannot be fully explored, nor its marvels come to an end, for it contains fields 1 and gardens 2, flowers and sweet basil, pavilions 3 and brides 4, brocades 5 and measures 6, treasures and rarities, spiritual exercises 7 and caravanserais 8, ascents 9 and stations 10, proofs and signs, miracles and graces 11, reports and stories and glad tidings, vows and allusions and expressions, explicit statements and hints and metaphors, limits and forms and ends. ﴿Alif Lam Mim. That is the Book, wherein no doubt﴾ 12 — that is, in that secret which He concealed in the isolated letters at the openings of the surahs for the spiritual beings 13 and the lordly ones 14, the all-dominating angels, the prophets and messengers, the saints and the righteous — i.e., there is no doubt in it. So the Alifs 15 indicate the Oneness of the Essence, the Lams 16 indicate the beautiful attributes and perfect qualities, and the Mims 17 are fields, the Ras 18 are gardens, the Has 19 are pavilions, the Musabbihat 20 are brides, the Mujmalat 21 are brocades, and the Mufassalat 22 are spiritual exercises and caravanserais. When the seeker 23 roams in the fields, plucks from the gardens, enters the pavilions, beholds the brides, dons the brocades, strolls in the spiritual exercises, and dwells in the chambers of the caravanserais, that leads him to his Lord and plucks him away from all else. And each one takes from that according to his journey to the stations of ocular unveilings 24, the stations of the theophanies of beneficence 25, the abodes of lordly openings 26, and the manifestations of holy lights 27. So the people of ocular unveilings behold its meanings in the Preserved Tablet 28 with the pupils of luminous insights; the people of lordly openings witness from it the forms of realities at the rising of the suns of gnostic lights; and the people of holy manifestations and spiritual souls hear the address with the adab 29 of their hearts, which are filled with the gleams of merciful secrets, and they receive knowledge of it from God; the luminous intercession 30 does not veil them from witnessing the beauty of the solitary Essence, nor does it turn them away from receiving the jewels of holy words, for He has removed the veil for them and spoken to them in the station of proximity and nearness, and permitted them to dispose in understanding the address and returning the answer. ﴿God blots out what He wills and establishes; and with Him is the Mother of the Book﴾ 31. So blotting out is an establishment for those who are absent in the lights of secrets, names, and attributes; and establishment is a perfection for them for those whose Lord has appeared in the manifestations of theophanies. That is, God blots out what He wills of the gleams of fancies and imaginations, and establishes what He wills of the meanings of names and attributes. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills of all languages and all sounds, and establishes what He wills of the letters determined by different tongues and types of expressions. So the letters are ancient forms that glorify Him, sanctify Him, and declare Him transcendent above the coverings of fancies and adornments, and they fear in awe of Him lest He blot them out among the blotted-out things and place them among the carried and posited things. The dots are an adornment for them, distinguishing them among the distinguished things, raising them among the raised things, establishing them among the simple and compound, the transmitted and heard, and delighting them among the invented, originated, and manufactured things, and strengthening them for glorification, sanctification, praise, and remembrance of the earths and heavens. ﴿And there is not a thing but glorifies His praise, but you do not understand their glorification﴾ 32. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills from the hearts of His saints of ends and goals, plans and choices, and establishes what He wills of words and expressions, sources and disputes, symbols and allusions. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills from the hearts of His chosen ones of whisperings, thoughts, and passing fancies, and establishes what He wills of gifts, unveilings, determinations, ascents, and descents. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills from the hearts of His beloved ones of passions, temptations, and fluctuations, and establishes what He wills of states, influxes, attractions, and ecstatic utterances. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills from the hearts of His elect ones of names and named things, and establishes what He wills of inspirations, receptions, and intellectual and transmitted sciences. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills of doubts from the inner beings of the people of righteous deeds, and establishes what He wills of pure faith and sincerity of intentions. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills of the impurities of human follies from the hearts of the people of insight and struggle, and establishes what He wills of the orientation of the command for the people of proximity and witnessing. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills of the abrogated things from the hearts of the firmly rooted pegs 33, and establishes what He wills of the established things in the mirror of the arriving poles 34. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills of otherness from the understandings of the acting scholars, and establishes what He wills of secrets in the hearts of the sincere seekers. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills of the cloud of natures from the heaven of intellects and the perfect bells 35, and establishes what He wills of the revelation of inspiration in the perspectives of those who inform of hidden things, the speakers. Or you may say: God blots out what He wills of the penetration of the command before the screeching of the pens of the writers, and establishes what He wills of the precedents of sciences in the innermost beings of the loving writers. Or you may say: He blots out by His eternal will from the souls

the attribute of humanity from the seekers 36, and establishes in their hearts the attribute of spirituality; or you say: God effaces from the hearts of the lovers the opposition of trial, and establishes in their spirits the reality of the light of certainty; or you say: He effaces from the secrets of the gnostics 37 the marks of servitude, and establishes in them the marks of lordship 38; or you say: He effaces from the tablets of intellects the form of thoughts, and establishes in them the light of remembrance; or you say: He effaces from the pages of hearts the sciences of temporal events, and establishes in them the sciences of gnosis; or you say: He effaces from the spirits of the veracious 39 the signs of the messages, and establishes in them the rare inspirations and the realities of contemplations; or you say: He effaces from the eyes of intellects the witnessed signs, and establishes in them the lights of the attributes; or you say: God effaces what He wills—that is, He conceals in hearts the traces of attributes, and establishes—that is, He manifests to their defects the lights of the Essence; or you say: God effaces what He wills from the sources of deeds when spirits settle in the collective barzakhs 40, and establishes what He wills from the brilliant states in the innermost of the people of secrets, the human nature in the dark temples, and establishes what He wills from the gifts of the sciences of ladun 41 and the subtleties of gnostic knowledge; or you say: God effaces what He wills from the traces established in the scrolls of the people of the secret and speciality, and establishes what He wills from the divine descents in the unseen of the identity of spiritual spirits. So the spirits are lamps of light, kindled in the niches of luminous bodies and corporeal temples with the oils extracted from the trees of gnosis, the precious breaths of the adornments of beneficence, and the shining lights of the divine glories and lordly secrets. "God is the Light of the heavens and the earth" 42. By His lordly light, the wayfarer 43 ascends to the station of "two bow-lengths or nearer" 44; by His merciful secret, the devotee is drawn to the presence of witnessing and the highest station; by His holy remembrance, the lover disappears from witnessing the lights of the Essence and the meanings of the most beautiful Names and Attributes; by His luminous knowledge, he gazes into the gnostic sciences, the subtleties of the sciences of ladun, and the meanings of the Furqanic 45 surahs, exquisite in word and meaning; and by His abundant blessings upon His beloved, our master Muhammad (God bless him and grant him peace), the numbers of rewards multiply, ranks rise, and the origin and foundation are honored. "And with Him is the Mother of the Book" 46—that is, the Mother of the Book predestined in acts and attributes, and the Mother of the Book of the attributes of the Essence, for all things begin from Him and to Him return. Whatever is in the Book of Acts of the determined things, He effaces and establishes; whatever is in the Book of the Essence and Attributes is transcendent above effacement and establishment. Every changed thing among the determined things is changed from the Mother of the Book, and every effaced thing is effaced from the Mother of the Book. Therefore, some of the gnostics said: When the secrets of the people of tawhid 47 swim in the sea of tajrid 48 in the state of tafrid 49, the Real sometimes drowns them in the sea of the negations of pre-eternity for their annihilation and passing away, and drowns them in the seas of knowledge of pre-eternity with their subsistence with the Real—that is from the manifestation of the light of the Essence and the manifestation of the light of the Attributes in the Essence. The Essence is the source of those wonders and marvels. Among the people of tawhid, there is one whom the Real draws to Himself, impossible by himself from himself, so He said: "God effaces what He wills and establishes, and with Him is the Mother of the Book." Whoever is annihilated from the Real by the Real is annihilated from lordship, let alone servitude. Letters: If you read the science of letters, then a person is like a tablet with lines, and a form of the essence like a model for all existence and for whoever sees. The letters of your meanings are not exhausted—for the ignorant, no, or they do not appear. Whoever traverses a depth, its secrets are effacement and in it is something denied by him. A garden whose cultivation blossoms, and a love whose affection bears fruit. The breaths of hearts bestow it, so the scent of musk appears, even more fragrant. A breeze of the secret from its fragrance, subtleties that fold and do not unfold. The inhaler of its breaths becomes intoxicated, but whoever is sealed does not become intoxicated. Cups of its wine are passed around, and in its tavern is the bearer of the intoxicant. In the courtyards of its taverns, the mathani 50 of remembrance are recited without ceasing. Whoever is cured by hearing its melodies—that is the wretched one, the most losing. Whoever strays from its door, turning away—that is the strong one, the one who retreats. Praise be to God, by whose grace righteous deeds are completed. May God bless our master Muhammad, His servant and messenger, and his companions, and grant them peace. After this, these are the descriptions of noble blessings from the Prophet (God bless him and grant him peace), who described their virtues and mentioned what God has prepared for their reciter of reward and recompense. It is narrated from the great scholars and the eminent saints and all the gnostics (may God be pleased with them all) that they said: No servant from the community of our master Muhammad (God bless him and grant him peace) prays upon him with these noble blessings except that God commands Gabriel (peace be upon him) to write for him in the register of his deeds the reward of an accepted pilgrimage. After that, God commands angels to descend to the grave of the Prophet (God bless him and grant him peace) with the light of divine pleasure and inform him that so-and-so from your community has sent you this gift. Then the Prophet (God bless him and grant him peace) rejoices and says in reply: "He is my beloved and from my community." Whoever wishes to see the Prophet (God bless him and grant him peace) in his dream should perform ablution after the night prayer on Thursday night or Friday night, pray two rak'ahs 51, supplicate to God, then recite these noble blessings with sincere intention, presence of heart, and humility, and sleep in a state of ablution and sincerity. Then he will see the Prophet (God bless him and grant him peace), speak with him, ask about his state, and he will give him glad tidings of goodness and honor from God on the Day of Resurrection. When he departs from this world, God commands the angels of the nearest heaven to descend at his funeral, and Gabriel (peace be upon him) clothes him in the garments of Paradise. It is fitting for the one who perseveres in these blessings to instruct that they be written and placed in his shroud in the grave, so that their honor may appear to him. When they are buried with him, angels descend upon him with trays of light in his grave. Whoever wishes to see this great honor should dig up the grave of one with whom they were buried and see their reward and lights. It is narrated that in Baghdad there was a woman who had a son of indescribable beauty and comeliness. His mother fell in love with him and was so consumed by love that she nearly perished from her passion. One day, her son became intoxicated, entered his home, and slept on his bed. His mother came to him at night, entered his bed in the guise of a strange woman, and seduced him. He had intercourse with her, not knowing she was his mother. When she became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter, she hid the child from her son and gave the girl to a righteous man from the land of Hijaz. He took her and traveled with her to his country, where she stayed for a time. Then the son resolved to travel with the intention of the noble pilgrimage. While he was in Mecca one day, suddenly...

He was a man who had a daughter. He saw a man of beautiful appearance and fine form, so he hosted him for a night. Conversation occurred between them, and by the power of God Almighty and His favors, the man informed him and said, 'I have a daughter of exquisite beauty and loveliness, and she has no family; she is suitable for you.' So he asked for her hand in marriage from him and married her, not knowing that she was his own daughter. Then he traveled with her afterward to his own country. When he entered his country with her and brought her to his mother, she recognized her and recalled her evil deed. She regretted what she had done and grieved intensely beyond measure for what she had done 52 and what had occurred from her, and she could not reveal her deed until she died from the intensity of grief and the evil of what she had done. When she departed the world and joined her Lord, her son wept for her and grieved for her intensely beyond measure. There was a woman in their neighborhood who was aware of his mother's secret. She said to him, 'O you, how long will you weep and grieve for your mother when she was an evil woman and did such and such with you, and became pregnant by you, and this daughter who is now your wife—you were drunk that day.' And she told him the story from beginning to end. When the son heard this tale and verified its truth, he became extremely angry at his mother. He went to her grave with a grave-digger, firewood, and fire, intending to exhume her. But his mother had been constant in reciting these noble prayers 53. When he dug up her grave and opened it, he found her sitting on a throne of fresh pearls, wearing garments of Paradise. When he saw her in this state of honor and great dignity from God Almighty, he was extremely astonished, bewildered, and became confused about what to do with her. He said to her, 'By what means did you attain this 54 great honor, when you were an evil woman and did such and such?' She said to him, 'O my son, I used to recite these noble prayers every Thursday and on the night of Friday 55, and I have attained what I am in of this bliss only through the blessing of reciting them in the world, and I reached this rank.' So he took it from his mother and left the grave, and came with it to the scholars, ascetics, and great saints of Baghdad, and related to them the story and what had happened with his mother, from beginning to end. When they heard that from him, they were extremely amazed at his affair, and they took the copy from him, and each one of them copied a copy for himself, and they tested it and found it as he had told them. May God benefit us through its blessings. Whoever perseveres in reciting it in this world will not be tested in his grave, nor will fear or terror befall him in his grave; rather, he will remain sound and safe in bliss and joy until the Day of Resurrection. And whoever has a need from God Almighty and seeks intercession through it, his need will be fulfilled by the permission of God Almighty. And whoever is sick, and the physicians have given up on him, or is afraid of a tyrant, or is bound with chains and fetters, or other 56 important needs of worldly or religious matters, let him perform ablution and pray two rak'ahs 57 after the night prayer before the witr 58, then recite these noble prayers, then place them under his head and sleep. For he will see the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and he will say to him, 'Every worry and evil is sufficed for you, and all your needs are fulfilled.' If he is unable to recite them, and he is illiterate, let him perform ablution and pray two rak'ahs after the night prayer and place them under his head and sleep. For he will attain his goal and achieve his desire by the permission of God. And whoever perseveres in reciting them, his sins will be forgiven through the blessing of these noble prayers and through the blessing of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. May God benefit us through their secrets and virtues. Their explanation is long; we have abbreviated it for fear of prolongation. And these are the noble prayers which we are explaining. We present and dedicate it to the presence of Your Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. And include us in his intercession, all of us, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Cause us to die in love of him and make us among the elite of his nation, all of them, through his Book and his Sunnah. Do not cause us to deviate from his path or his law. And reward him on our behalf with the best You have rewarded a prophet for his nation. O Allah, magnify him in this world by exalting his mention, manifesting his religion, and preserving his law; and in the Hereafter by his intercession for his nation, increasing his reward and recompense, granting him precedence in the Praiseworthy Station, and advancing him over all creation until the Witnessed Day 86. And may Allah bless our master Muhammad and his family and all his companions. Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe. And peace be upon all the prophets and messengers, and the blessings of Allah be upon them all. And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. (26) Motives of Muhammadan 87 and Ahmadi 88 yearnings, and precedents of eternal holy happiness, and divisions of Meccan and Medinan fragrances, and radiances of prophetic, chosen 89 love lights, and precious blessings that incline to this the lights of the people of sincere love and approved states, and breezes of blessings that unveil from their lifetimes what is in the station of the Spirit of Spirits 90 of the Throne and the Sultan of the worlds of the carpet 91 (27) my master and my lord, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and upon his family. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, and cause the truth to gush forth from hearts the darkness of ignorance and doubt and adornment, who took in the heart the place of light for sight and blackness for the eye. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the spirit of the two weighty ones 92, and the bride of the two kingdoms, and the grandfather of al-Hasan and al-Husayn, who took in the heart the place of the spirit in the body and pitched the tent of his love between the entrails and the kidneys. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the gift of grace and favor, and the possessor of the kohl-lined eye and the beautiful face, who took in the heart the place of rest for the soul (28) and nourishment for the body. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the possessor of obligations and traditions, and the most perfect of those who conveyed what he brought of the jewels of revelation and was entrusted with it, who took in the heart the place of mercy for servants and construction for the homeland. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the best of those by whom time and season are blessed, and the most generous of those whose love dwells in the core of the heart and resides, who took in the heart the place of security for fear and safety from the calamities of worries and trials. So bless him, O Allah, and his family with a blessing by which what is apparent and hidden in us is set right, and by which You protect us from terrible horrors and all afflictions and tribulations (29) by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. * O strangers of the sanctuary, whose love dwells in the entrails, * You are the goal and the wish, even if I am far from home. * Since you dwelled in my vital core, I have no dwelling other than you. * You are the light of my eye and my life for all time. * I am a servant at your door, soul and body. * I am a guardian of love and entrusted with affection. * With union and kindness, bestow favors upon the lovesick. * How often have you fulfilled your covenant to a lover who relied on you. * All that you do is among the most beautiful traditions. * So do whatever you wish; all your deeds are good. * The servant has followed your grace, so lead him with the halter 93. (30) * Nothing has bound me except the one who clarified the obligatory and the sunnah. * Shaybat al-Hamd 94, his grandfather, possessed Yemen by the right hand. * The best of the Chosen One 95 acquired at the time of Sayf ibn Dhi Yazan 96. * And by him all people were given glad tidings, every one who had divined. * And his light appeared upon every grandfather with whom it was connected. * And truth and guidance rose high, while disbelief reaped trials. * And peace be upon him as long as longing stirs what is in the heart. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, a blessing by which You turn away from us bloodshed and forbidden things, and by which You protect us from disgraceful duties and all burdens 38, by Your favor and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. O strangers in their beauty, they have robbed me, and by the gentleness of their generosity they have possessed me. They brought me near by their kindness to their sanctuary, and they found me broken and mended me. They cast me into the garden of the valley of their sanctuary; O bliss at their casting me! They said, "Will you forget their love?" I said, "No, I am infatuated with you, so do not drive me away." O people of the sanctuary and dwellers of Najd, I am your slave, will you not have mercy on me? I have been standing at the door for a long time; they found me negligent, forgive me. I came to them humbly and as a lowly slave, seeking refuge, perhaps they will accept me. When I arrived to them with a ruined heart, they looked at me with a glance and revived me. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the beloved of hearts and the key to the treasuries of the unseen, who has attained in the places of good things a station that no wayfarer 108 or attracted one 109 has attained. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the owner of the mule 110 and the swift she-camel 111, the turban 112 and the staff 113, who has attained in the abode of felicity a station that no distant or near one has attained. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, a blessing by which our eyes delight in the beauty of his elegant face, and by which we drink from the spring of his sweetest watering-place and the Salsabil 127 of his pure Kawthar 128, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. ❖ O merciful, gentle Master, ❖ Turn me to what pleases You, for I am gentle. ❖ My heart is tormented, for it is my repose ❖ In You, and how often does the lover's torment clear away? ❖ In sweet torment, how many pleasures ❖ Have resulted in extinguishing the fire's disease? ❖ Indeed, Paradise is a garden for the youth ❖ Who enters it through a narrow, strait gate. ❖ He who does not add patience for the constant one ❖ Will not find the delightful garden of union. ❖ The lover does not hasten for his desire, ❖ For every lover is truly fana 129. ❖ How many a sleepless lover of sickness and passion ❖ Has poured tears like molten embers? ❖ How many times have his eyelids dried from the taste of slumber, ❖ While his eye has found solace in pouring carnelian 130? ❖ How many a slain one has died of love and ❖ Has been joined to the slain in the valley of Aqiq 131? ❖ When he saw the beloved's abode, he folded ❖ In the sea of that light like the folding of the drowned. ❖ He turned yellow, bent, and swayed, ❖ So that no one saw him for weeping and sobbing. ❖ He tore his collars from ecstasy, ❖ And tore his heart, hiding tear after tear. ❖ If he dies of ecstasy after this, then ❖ He has not fulfilled the heart's rights; is there anyone who will awaken? ❖ Our beloved is ransomed with our souls, ❖ Wealth, and children, O you of discernment. ❖ This is the beloved of Allah, the sea of fidelity, ❖ The eye of purity, the light of guidance and the path. ❖ The treasure of wealth, the spirit of growth and splendor, ❖ His face captivates people with its brilliance.

From his smiling mouth at dawn I see, at the time of sweet speech, the eye of the companion. The jewel of teeth therein contains passion, the chains of the path like the bounty of pure wine. The stature is a tender bough when it bends, in its most delightful ease, graceful and elegant. The palm, from which comforts spread, for the successor of Taha 132 by a moist wiping. The suns of humanity shone from his face, for God gave glad tidings from a radiant countenance. The most pure of origin and branch, and who is like the Messenger of God, and he is the noble one. May God bless him, the Lord of the Most High, as long as his fragrant scent wafts in the desert. Fragrant breezes of musk and ambergris, and necklaces of saffron, and jewels, and a delightful spring, and Salsabil 133, and Kawthar 134, and light, jasmine, and nisrin 135, and roses, and blossoms, and radiant blessings whose beauty's luster appeared (49). And brides of praises are presented to the station of the Master of Prophets, Saints, and the Cherubim 136, and all of humanity. So O God, bless him and his family with a blessing such that no desirous one rejoices in what he has, attaining the goal and obtaining rain. And a speaker said: Muhammad is a human, not like humans; rather, he is like a ruby among stones. O God, bless and grant peace to our Master and Patron Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, the delight of thoughts and reflection, and the light of insight and sight, who settled in the heart a station whose rank transcends the perceptions of intellects and the capacity of humans. O God, bless and grant peace to our Master and Patron Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, the secret of the opening verses and chapters 137, and the gathering of divine truths and forms, who settled in the heart a station whose description is exalted (50) beyond the knowledge of the gnostics 138 among the elite who gaze with the lights of unveilings upon the tablets of decree and destiny. O God, bless and grant peace to our Master and Patron Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, the master of the people of the desert and the settled, and the one who enriches the eyes of the people of ecstasy, passion, and wakefulness, who settled in the heart a station whose understanding is subtle beyond the thoughts of the intelligent and the verifiers who contemplate the outcomes of sciences with sound taste and correct insight. O God, bless and grant peace to our Master and Patron Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, the best of those who pardon and forgive, and the most generous of those who strive in Your path, and elevate Your religion, and proclaim it, who settled in the heart a station whose rank is great in the sight of the monks of the monasteries of light and the solitary ones 139 who acknowledge the rights of Lordship, who call upon their Master in the darkness of night and at the times of dawn. (51) So O God, bless him and his family with a blessing by which we become among those who are known for love of him among the lovers and become famous, and acquire the treasure of gifts from the cloak of his secret, and store up by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Why the exaltation through journeys and travel, while you are the witness of the report and the hidden? I listened only to what I received from words, and I saw nothing but what You manifest to sight. If it is hidden, then the unseen of the unseen is its possessor, the secret of the distracted one in constant devotion and in breasts. And if it appears, then it is a tablet that you observe, from the letters of the Essence, various types of chapters. So by Him who shone for the spirits from You, and what was split for them without a fragrant breeze, were it not for You, You would show to my eye every shelter, a new secret, an act beyond human power. When they hastened on swift, noble she-camels, red of arrival, towards the House and the Stone 140. My Master, O Messenger of God (52), were it not for You, no secrets would have overflowed, nor lights, nor would veils and curtains have been rent. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no suns or moons would have shone, nor would spheres and cycles have been illuminated. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no springs or rivers would have flowed, nor would sweet basil and flowers have wafted. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no clouds or rains would have poured, nor would branches and trees have ripened. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no camel drivers or birds would have sung, nor would masters and nobles have been honored. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no times or ages would have boasted, nor would cities have been opened. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no papers or lines would have rejoiced, nor would regions and quarters have taken pride. (53) My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no voices or remembrances would have risen, nor would litanies have been paired with evening and morning. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no mounts or lights would have been blessed, nor would mournings and burdens have been overwhelmed. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no odes or poems would have been recited, nor would melodies and strings have been sweetened. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no forms or states would have varied, nor would needs and desires have been fulfilled. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no chains of transmission or reports would have been authentic in the honor of Yathrib 141, nor would monks and rabbis have been enamored with its mention. My Master, O Messenger of God (54), were it not for You, no lineages or moons would have risen, nor would worries, sorrows, and troubles have ceased. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no stations or abodes would have been mentioned, nor would the righteous and the best have migrated to Tayyiba the Good 142. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, no lover would have wandered in love for the blessed Tabah 143, tearing veils, nor would a lover have cried out, uncovering the face and removing the veil. My Master, O Messenger of God, were it not for You, the illuminated city of Medina would not have been honored above all other places and regions, nor would its inhabitant have found life sweet, nor a pleasant dwelling or rest. May God bless you and your noble, pure family, and your chosen, good Companions, with a blessing by which You crown us with the crown of awe and dignity, and clothe us among the lovers with the garments of honor, glory (55), and pride, and by which we become among the winners of God's pleasure in this abode and in that abode, and grant abundant and exalted peace. And praise be to God, Lord of the worlds. You see, the eye looks at this bringer of glad tidings, showing me those distant abodes. I give him a spirit rejoicing in it, and I offer him my gaze, and take my apology. And I offer near me the greeting, and sufficient for me is that rank and pride. And I write my longing with the water of tears, in a simple style when the word is concise. And I ransom with what has lengthened of my life, for Tayyiba, those short nights. Do you see if I will converse there with the Messenger, openly, as a mother desires for her secret? And I know that at his door I stood and kissed that wall. And what shall I say, when all people are intoxicated there, like me, bewildered? And I fear, O Intercessor of sinners, grant refuge from the door of Your sanctuary, seeking protection. (56) And be my intercessor on the day when no intercessor other than You will release the distressed captives. O God, bless and grant peace to our Master Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise his strength and his litanies, God gives him what no eye has seen, nor ear heard, of goodness, and increases him. O God, bless and grant peace to our Master and Patron Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise his daily portion and his litanies, God fulfills his worldly and otherworldly needs and achieves his desire. O God, bless and grant peace to our Master and Patron Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise his strength (57) and his testimony, God rectifies his heart and his body, and purifies his intention and his belief. O God, bless and grant peace to our Master and Patron Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise in his bed and his pillow, God treats him with His subtle kindness, and subdues his enemies and enviers. O God, bless and grant peace to our Master and Patron Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise his proof and his struggle, God expands his breast with the light of faith, and multiplies in him his longings and his love. O God, bless and grant peace to our Master and Patron Muhammad and to the family of our Master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise his sword and his scabbard, God suffices him against the evil of what he names, and protects him.

His station and his birth. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master 144 and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise his path and guidance, Allah raises his mention in the highest assembly and purifies his heart and innermost being from the insinuations of doubts. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise his pillar and reliance, Allah protects him from afflictions and turns away Iblis and his hosts from him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise his parchment and ink, Allah mends the fracture of his heart and rectifies its flaw and corruption. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad 145, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise his solitude and seclusion, Allah immerses him in the oceans of His love and kindles the fire of yearning and passion in his heart. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and makes his praise his wing and steed, Allah mentions him among those whom He mentions and raises his highest edifice and extols it. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him and beautifies his praise and recitation, Allah establishes him with the firm word and causes him to die upon the two testimonies. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, possessors of glory and lordship, and his Companions, people of devotion and worship, with a blessing that grants us through it the subtleties of knowledge and benefit, crowns us with the crown of honor, prosperity, and happiness 146, and protects us through it from the hindrances that cut off from reaching You in the beginning and the return, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. He remembered the sanctuary and its support and pillar, So he wept and made his envious ones weep out of mercy. So ecstasy bought from him ready cash On the day of separation, and bought from him his heart. And it drew out from his sides the blade of his prostration, And gave him in exchange, after sleep, sleeplessness. Tears have drained, O you who depart, my tears, And your turning away after that increased them. Return him, or take the one left behind after him, If you will not grant him his desire. O you who have taken control of an eye whose tears you own, Between passion and its whiteness and blackness. Passion took a covenant from sleep that After separation, it would not visit the pillow. By Allah, there are innards afflicted by a burning, Whose firebrands kindle the fire of passion. O dwellers of Najd, when will you succor Your yearning one and protect him from adversity? 147 Has a phantom visitor from you visited him, And seen him on the bed of illness or returned to him? O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him in seclusions and gatherings, Allah delivers him 149 from the calamities of innovations and the incitements of desires. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, such that when the rememberer remembers him in the litanies 152 and daily devotions 153, his breaths become fragrant and the cups of gifts and subtleties 154 are poured upon him. And He delivered him from the darkness of doubts and illusions. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord (76) Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, such that when the one who remembers him and increases blessings and salutations upon him, his noble image is engraved in the pages of his heart, and the mouths of praisers and the tongues of pens praise him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, such that when the one who remembers him and increases blessings and salutations upon him, Allah turns His noble face towards him and makes him among those to whom it is said, 'Enter Paradise in peace.' So bless him, O Allah, and his family, the full moons who dispel the darkness of gloom, and his Companions who uphold the matters of the Sharia and the duties of rulings, a blessing (78) by which You carry us on the shoulders of righteousness and honor, and by which You make us attain, through Your pleasure and his pleasure, the ultimate goal and desire, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the best of those for whom You raised his mention in the highest assembly and clothed him with the garments of Your good pleasure secretly and openly, who said: 'I met Gabriel, peace be upon him, and he said to me: I give you glad tidings that Allah Almighty says to you: Whoever blesses you, I bless him, and whoever greets you, I greet him. So I prostrated.' O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the best of those whose breaths blow with the breezes of opening 157 and whose stillness and movements are in obedience to Allah, who said: 'There is none among you who greets me but Allah returns my soul to me so that I may return the greeting to him. (79) Gabriel says to you, O Muhammad: So-and-so, son of so-and-so, sends you greetings. So I say: And upon him be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.' O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the crown of the noble messengers and the pole 158 of lordship, lofty in rank and station, who said: 'There is no one who greets me but Allah returns my soul to me so that I may return the greeting to him.' O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the best of those whose mention Allah has made fragrant on tongues, and whom He has loved and chosen for His holy presence and nearness, who said: 'There is no Muslim who greets me ten times but it is as if he has freed a slave.' O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad (80), the best of those to whom You granted honor and victory, and bestowed complete nobility and pride, who said:

"Jibrīl (peace be upon him) came to me and said: 'Are you content, O Muḥammad, that no one from your community sends blessings (ṣalāh) upon you except that I send blessings upon him tenfold, and no one from your community sends greetings (salām) upon you except that I send greetings upon him tenfold?'" O Allāh, send blessings and peace upon our master and patron Muḥammad, and upon the family of our master Muḥammad, the most noble prophet whom You singled out with the subtleties of miracles and supported with conclusive proofs and clear signs, who said: "When one of you prays, let him say: 'The greetings (al-taḥiyyāt) are for Allāh, and the prayers (al-ṣalawāt) and good words; peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allāh and His blessings; peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allāh.' For when you say it, it reaches every righteous servant in the heavens and the earth." O Allāh, send blessings and peace upon our master and patron Muḥammad, and upon the family of our master Muḥammad, the best of those whose blessing and pleasure the lover seizes, and whose dwellings and abode the visitor seeks blessing from seeing; about whom Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (may Allāh be pleased with him) said: "Sending blessings upon him is more erasing of sins than water is for fire, and sending peace upon him is better than freeing slaves, and love for him (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) is better than the shedding of souls or the sword in the path of Allāh." O Allāh, send blessings and peace upon our master and patron Muḥammad, and upon the family of our master Muḥammad, the exemplar of mankind and the descendant of noble chiefs, who said: "Verily, Allāh has angels who travel about the earth conveying to me the greetings (salām) of my community." And in another narration: "Verily, Allāh has angels who roam the roads conveying to me the greetings (salām) of my community." And one of the righteous saw him in a dream and said to him: "O Messenger of Allāh, these people who come to you and greet you (yusallimūna ʿalayka)—do you comprehend their greeting (salām)?" He said: "Yes, and I return the greeting (salām) to them." So send blessings, O Allāh, upon him and upon his family, a blessing by which You make us among those who fulfill the reality of Your servitude with the most complete fulfillment, and by which You enroll us in the ranks of those who acknowledge the right of Your Lordship and say: "My Lord is Allāh," then remain steadfast. And grant abundant and exalted peace (taslīman), and praise be to Allāh, Lord of the worlds. Peace, as the calyx splits open from the flower, * Upon the pure one dwelling in purity until the Resurrection. Peace upon him whom Allāh, our Lord, * Conferred peace and enjoined us with that in the Remembrance. Peace upon the best of mankind, Muḥammad, * My intercessor tomorrow before the Dominant, the Possessor of Command. Peace upon him whose person the heart has folded, * Though the abode in ʿĀ'ishah's grave encloses him. Peace upon him whom I shall never cease to love, * By the power of my God, as long as my life remains. Peace upon him whom I thank Allāh, if He guides * To love of him, a grace for which my thanks fall short. Peace upon him by whom Allāh saved His creation * From the blindness of misguidance and disbelief. Peace upon him who brought the revelation, radiant, * Illuminating, as darkness clears away at dawn. Peace upon him whose command Allāh manifested * Through his decisive Criterion (Furqān), healing what was in the breast. Peace upon him—if I cling, as a refuge, * To his Sunnah and the revelation, I am eased toward ease. Peace upon him for whom the moon split as a sign * By Allāh's power, the Creator of the moon. Peace upon him who gave drink to the entire army * With water seen flowing between his fingers. Peace upon him who, when he poured his ablution water, * At the spring of Tabūk, caused it to gush forth until the end of time. Peace upon him whose manifest virtue is exalted, * And whose great signs are beyond counting and enumeration. Peace upon the full moon, * Peace upon his companions, the brilliant stars. Peace upon the best of the Companions after him, * His companion in life and death, Abū Bakr. Peace upon al-Fārūq (the Distinguisher), possessor of knowledge and guidance, * Peace upon his follower in virtue, Abū ʿUmar (ʿUmar). Peace upon the cousin of the Prophet Muḥammad, * ʿAlī, father of the two grandsons, the learned scholar. Peace upon Saʿd and Khawṣ (?) * With pure peace, Saʿīd, then Ṭalḥah, possessor of piety. Peace upon him whom Muḥammad called * His disciples, and the doer of deeds at Badr. Peace upon the two scholars, ʿAwf and the pious, * Al-Amīn ibn al-Jarrāḥ, possessor of forbearance and patience. Peace upon al-ʿAbbās, possessor of glory and sublimity, * And Ḥamzah, master of masters, possessor of pride. Peace upon her who was a mother to the believer, * Sufficient is the daughter of al-Ṣiddīq for what came in the Remembrance. Peace upon the soul of the minister, our mother, * The wounded one, the source of virtues and goodness. Peace upon al-Zahrā', the piece of Aḥmad, * And all the daughters of al-Muṣṭafā, the pure of fragrance. Peace upon the family of the Prophet Muḥammad, * And may the pouring rain shower upon their resting place. Peace upon all the Companions and those who followed * In excellence and piety, who are after them in succession. O Allāh, send blessings and peace upon our master and patron Muḥammad, and upon the family of our master Muḥammad, the best of those whose mention and fragrance Allāh perfumed in the highest assembly, and whose heart He filled with the light of faith and wisdom, and purified him—about whom it is narrated from al-Khiḍr and Ilyās (peace be upon them), regarding the virtue with which he was singled out over the rest of the noble prophets, that they said: "We heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) say: 'No believer says "May Allāh bless Muḥammad (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalā Muḥammad)" except that Allāh strengthens his heart and illuminates it.'" O Allāh, send blessings and peace upon our master and patron Muḥammad, and upon the family of our master Muḥammad, the great in rank and sanctity, the fountainhead of knowledge and wisdom—about whom it is narrated from al-Khiḍr and Ilyās (peace be upon them), regarding the honor with which he was singled out over the rest of the noble prophets, that they said: "We heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) say: 'Whoever says "May Allāh bless Muḥammad (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalā Muḥammad)," Allāh purifies his heart from hypocrisy just as a thing is purified with water.'" And by this chain of transmission, they said: "We heard the Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) say from the pulpit: 'Whoever says "O Allāh, bless Muḥammad (Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad)," has opened for himself seventy doors of mercy.'" O Allāh, send blessings and peace upon our master and patron Muḥammad, and upon the family of our master Muḥammad, the Imām of Ṭaybah and the Sacred Precinct, the best of those who circumambulated the House and prayed behind the Station (Maqām)—about whom it is narrated from al-Khiḍr and Ilyās (peace be upon them), regarding what he was singled out with over the rest of the noble prophets, that they said: "We heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) say: 'No believer says "May Allāh bless the Prophet Muḥammad (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalā al-nabī Muḥammad)" except that Allāh loves him, even if they hate him; and Allāh does not hate him until Allāh, glorified and exalted, loves him.'" And by this chain of transmission, they said: "A man from Syria (al-Shām) came to the Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) and said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, my father is an old man and he loves to see you.' He said: 'Bring him.' He said: 'He is blind.' He said:

«Tell him to say, during seven weeks, ‘May Allah bless the Prophet Muhammad,’ for indeed he will see me in a dream until he narrates the hadith from me.» So he did that, and he saw him in a dream, and he would narrate the hadith from him, peace be upon him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, regarding whom it has been narrated from al-Khidr and Elias (peace be upon them), concerning what was specially granted to him over the rest of the noble prophets, that they said: We heard the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say: «When you sit in a gathering, say ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and may Allah bless Muhammad,’ and Allah will appoint an angel over you to prevent you from backbiting, so that you do not backbite. And when you finish, say ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and may Allah bless the Prophet Muhammad,’ for people will not backbite you, and the angel will prevent you from that.» (87) O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, the path of our guidance, the imam of our qiblah (direction of prayer), the cave of our protection, and the sword of our victory, regarding whom it has been narrated from al-Khidr and Elias (peace be upon them) concerning the virtue of sending blessings upon him and what was specially granted to him over the rest of the prophets. They said: There was among the Children of Israel a prophet named Samuel (Samwil), whom Allah had granted victory over his enemies. He went out with his army, and they (the enemies) said: «This is a sorcerer who bewitches our eyes and corrupts our troops. Let us place him at the edge of the sea and defeat him.» So they went out with forty men and placed him at the edge of the sea. His companions said: «How shall we act?» He said: «Persevere and say, ‘May Allah bless Muhammad.’» So they charged and said it all together, and their enemies ended up at the edge of the sea and all drowned. Al-Khidr and Elias (peace be upon them) said: That took place in our presence. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, with a blessing by which You relieve our immense distress and grant us through it the ultimate of our hopes (88) and desires, by Your favor and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Take the best of the hadith from what * is narrated, O prophet, from a prophet, For it is from the heavenly treasure, So avail yourselves of it and magnify it. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, the master of the saints, the elite of the pious, and the imam of the leaders and the chosen ones, regarding whom it has been narrated from some of the exegetes (mufassirin) concerning his station in the saying of Allah, Blessed and Most High: «In it are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk whose taste never changes, rivers of wine delicious to the drinkers, and rivers of purified honey» (Quran 47:15), that the river of water is for Moses (peace be upon him), the river of wine is for Jesus (peace be upon him), and the river of honey is for Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Just as honey is superior to all other sweets, so too is the superiority of our Prophet over all other prophets. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord (89) and to the family of our master Muhammad, the imam of the two qiblahs (directions of prayer) and the light of the blackness of the two eyes, regarding whom submission and faith in him were humbled in Your saying: «O you who have believed, whoever among you apostatizes from his religion, Allah will bring a people whom He loves and who love Him, humble» (Quran 5:54). And this verse was revealed concerning twelve men from the people of Yemen who entered Mecca for the pilgrimage. He (peace be upon him) called them to Islam, and they said: «We want a sign.» So he took a staff and placed it on an idol called Hubal, after stripping it of its brocade. Muhammad said: «O Hubal, who am I?» It said: «You are the Messenger of Allah.» So they all prostrated to Allah Most High and declared the two testimonies (shahadatayn) to him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, the master of all creation, the lamp of darkness, the crown of prophethood and messengership, and the musk of the seal, among the virtues of the blessing of sending prayers upon him is what has been narrated from some of the lovers concerning him—upon him be the best of prayers and the purest of peace—that he said: I heard in Baghdad that there was a man there (90) who was poor, with a family and children, and he was among the devout and patient worshippers. One night he stood to pray, and the children cried from hunger. When he finished his prayer, he called his two sons and his family and directed them to send blessings upon the Beloved of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), saying: «Perhaps Allah, Glorified is He, through the blessing of our sending prayers upon our sought one, from His favor and generosity.» So they sat to send blessings, but sleep overcame them. The man got up and saw the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), who said: «You have sought wealth from us. Tomorrow morning, if Allah Most High wills, go to the house of so-and-so, the Magian, greet him, and say to him: ‘The supplication has been answered for you.’ And say to him: (91) ‘Muhammad ibn Abdullah says to you: Give me a share of what Allah Most High has given you.’» The man awoke joyful and happy, and said to himself: «Whoever sees the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) has seen the truth, for Satan cannot take his form. And it is impossible that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) would send me to a Magian to greet him.» So he slept again and saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) a second time, and he said the same thing to him. When morning came, he prayed the dawn prayer (subh) and set out asking about the Magian’s house. He was known for his vast wealth, so he was directed to it. He stood before him, and there were people, servants of the Magian, in front of him. The Magian found him strange and said to him: «Do you have a need?» He said to him: «Between you and me.» So the Magian ordered the people to leave. Then the man said to him: «Our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) conveys greetings of peace to you.» The Magian said: «And who is your Prophet?» He said to him: «Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).» He said to him: «Do you not know that I am a Magian and deny what he brought?» He said to him: «I know that, but I saw him twice, and he insisted to me.» The Magian said: «Is Allah a witness against you that he sent you to me?» He said: «Allah is a witness against me.» He said to him: «So what did he say to you?» He said to him: (92) «He said to you: ‘Give me a share of what Allah has given you, and the supplication has been answered.’» He said to him: «Do you not know what the supplication that was answered is?» He said: «I have no knowledge.» The Magian said to him: «Enter so that I may inform you.» He said: So I entered with him into a portico (saqif), and he said: «Extend your hand, and I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.» He said: So he embraced Islam, and his Islam was good. He called for his attendants and said to them: «Know that I was with you in error, and Allah has guided me, so I am guided, and I have believed and affirmed faith in Allah, Glorified and Most High, and His Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Whoever among you embraces Islam, then everything in his hand is lawful for him. And whoever remains on his religion, let him give me my wealth and not know me, and we will not know him.» He had servants who traded with his wealth, and most of them embraced Islam, while others brought his wealth. Then he called his son and said to him: «O my son, I have been guided to the religion of Islam and have embraced it. If you embrace Islam, you are from me and to me; but if you remain on your religion, I am innocent of you.» His son said to him: «I will not oppose you, O my father, in what you choose. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.» Then he called his daughter, who was married to her brother according to the Magian custom, and said to her the same as he had said.

For she said: (93) "O my father, by Allah, I have loathed my union with my brother since the night of the wedding. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." He said: So the man rejoiced and was delighted at their acceptance of Islam. Then he said to the man: "Do you wish that I teach you the supplication (al-da'wah) which I mentioned, and inform you of it, as the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, told me?" He said to him: "Yes." He said: "When I married my daughter to her brother, I provided abundant food, and those present and the Bedouins ate from it, and no one remained. When they departed, fatigue overtook me, so I spread a bed on the roof to rest. Opposite me was a widowed woman with young daughters, and they mentioned that they were from the descendants of al-Hasan ibn 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both." He said: "I heard one of them say to her mother: 'O mother, do you not see what the Magian (al-majūsī) has done to me tonight? He has stirred in us the desire for food, despite our hunger and poverty. May Allah not reward him well on our behalf.'" He said: "When I heard that, my heart was rent, and I grieved. I descended quickly to the house, took abundant food and bread, and asked about their number. It was said to me: 'Three daughters and their mother.' So I selected for them four garments and abundant provisions, and sent that to them." He said: "And I ascended to my place. (94) When what I had sent to them reached them, they rejoiced and said: 'O our mother, how can we eat from the food of this man, when he is a Magian?' Their mother said to them: 'Eat from the provision of Allah, the provision which Allah has brought to you.' They said: 'O our mother, we will not eat until we beseech Allah, glorified is He, for his acceptance of Islam and entry into Paradise through the intercession of our grandfather, upon him be prayers and peace.' So they began to implore Allah, mighty and majestic, and the mother said 'Amen' to their supplication. This is the supplication (al-da'wah) which I informed you of, and with which he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, gave me glad tidings. And I affirm for you your consolation." He said: "When I married my daughter to her brother, I divided my wealth and gave her half, but Islam separated them." So he said: "I have placed you in their position; the wealth is yours. Use it to support your family, as a glad tiding and out of love for the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, the light of truth guiding to the religion of Islam, the full moon whose radiance erases the traces of idol and image worshippers, he who, from the virtues of his prophetic blessing and the essence of his chosen miracles, (95) when he conquered Mecca and entered it, leaned his back against the wall of a disbelieving woman. She blocked the windows and locked the doors so that she would not hear his voice. Then Gabriel descended and informed him of her hatred for him. Then he ascended to heaven and returned, saying: "O Muhammad, your Lord sends you greetings of peace and says to you: 'If this woman is a disbeliever, your status is great. Since your foot has been in the shade of her wall, I have forgiven her sins and transgressions, and I have caused her to hate disbelief in her heart and made Islam beloved to her. The gates of heaven and the gates of her heart have been opened.'" So the woman hastened immediately to open the doors and kissed his foot, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, the best of those who fulfilled what he promised and spoke truth, the most generous whose branch blossomed in the tree of glory and preceded, he from whose pure virtues and brilliant signs it is that a woman went out to hear his sweetest speech and witness his most radiant, splendid sight. A man saw her and said to her: "Do you love him?" She said: "Yes." He said to her: "Then by his right, (96) raise your veil so that I may look at your face." She did so. Then she informed her husband of that, so he lit an oven (tannūr) and then said to her: "By his right, enter this oven." She threw herself into it. Then her husband went and informed him, peace be upon him, of that. He said to him: "Return and uncover her." He returned and saw her safe, covered in sweat. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, the master of the leaders of the worlds, the intercessor of the community, sent as a mercy to the worlds, he who, when a Bedouin said to him: "O Allah, have mercy on me and Muhammad, and do not have mercy on anyone else with us," said to him: "You have restricted what is vast. Why did you not ask for mercy for all Muslims?" O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, and to the family of our master Muhammad, the best of those who clarified the landmarks of religion and explained the Sunnah, the first from whom the earth will split and who will enter Paradise, he from whose perfect care (97) and mighty protection it is that when a camel came to him complaining, with its groaning and its speech, he returned it, reassured its terror, accepted its complaint, pitied its state, bought it with his wealth, freed it, and said to it: "You are free for the sake of Allah," and released it. In that was the greatest miracle for him and the most noble from him. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, with a blessing that will be for us the highest protection and shield against the accidents of time, and through which You will protect us in this world and the Hereafter from every trial and affliction, and preserve us from the evil of every calamity and temptation, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. My master, O Messenger of Allah, the camel fled to you and circled before you. You were compassionate toward its state and hastened immediately to answer its request. You did not delay in executing its plea. You regarded it with the eye of compassion and mercy, and you desired its inviolability and protection, as a favor from you to it, and as a bounty and kindness from you to it. You said to it: "Settle down, for Allah, our Protector, has granted security (98) and has permitted our hands." Then the noble companions and the virtuous, excellent leaders asked you what it said in its complaint and what it sought from you in terms of support and protection. You said to them: "They are its owners, intending to slaughter it, after it had reached the utmost exhaustion and fatigue in serving them. So it fled to us for that reason and escaped. Its heart was agitated and disturbed by what it heard. It sought our aid, and we will not have it slaughtered." Then its owners came and turned away from what they had intended of treachery, and changed, revealing the opposite of what they had concealed. They said: "What does the camel say, O Messenger of Allah?" I said to them: "The complaint is clear, and Allah is sufficient. It says: 'When I was young, I served you. When I grew old, you hastened to slaughter me and did not pause in my matter.'" They said: "That was so, O Prophet of Allah." I said to them: "What is the reward of a righteous servant from his masters?" They said: "Kindness." They said: "We will not sell it." I said to them: "You have lied and revealed the opposite of what you concealed. It sought your aid, and you did not aid it. It asked you to spare it, and you did not spare it. It apologized to you, and you did not have mercy on it. I am more deserving of mercy than you." So I bought it for one hundred dirhams and said to it: "Go, (99) O camel, for you are free for the sake of Allah. Never does a servant who seeks his Lord fail." ❖ When kings' servants grow gray ❖ in their bondage, they free them seeking righteousness. ❖ And you, O my master, are more worthy ❖ of this generosity. I have grown gray in bondage, so free me from the Fire. And I, O my master, O Messenger of Allah, have grown gray in the bondage of serving you, even though I am the weakest of servants. So who is more in need of that than me? And who will protect me from the pitfalls of sins and perils other than you? So I ask you by the mercy which Allah placed in your heart, with which you had mercy on the gazelle and the camel; by the compassion with which Allah distinguished you, with which you showed kindness to the young and the old; by the tenderness with which you favored the rich and the poor; by the affection with which you paid the debt of the debtor and freed the captive and the prisoner; by the care with which you raised the status of the lowly and the humble; by the standing (al-jāh) through which you manifested the merit of the obscure and the renowned; by the honor through which you inherited the insight of the people of conquest and illumination; by the special quality with which you overshadowed the tongues of the masters of allusion (100) and expression; and by the trust which you conveyed, in which no fault or shortcoming overtook you—that you free me as you freed it, and grant me refuge as you granted it refuge from the heat of the blazing fire and the torment of the scorching hellfire, and make easy for me the path of arrival.

To You is the journey, and You draw me to Your presence and pour upon me from the sea of Your abundant succor. You bestow upon me the vision of Your face, quench my heart from the abundant gifts of Your goodness, crown me with the crown of Your might, seat me upon the pulpits of sainthood and precedence, and become my hearing, my sight, and my tongue with which I speak and gesture. You make me known by my name, my patronymic, and my epithet—may my paradise, my bliss, and my great triumph be Your ransom—and place me in Your protection and under Your banner when the deeds of the deceitful are presented, the secrets of the innovators are unveiled, the states of the claimants are tested, the scandals of the deluded appear, the books of the authors are published, the scrolls of the disobedient and sinners are brought out, and cast before the All-Hearing, All-Seeing. Intercession, O my master, O Messenger of Allah—we have no seer! Intercession, O my master, O Messenger of Allah—the journey is long and life is short! Intercession, O my master, O Beloved of Allah 159, by the right of the loftiness of your station with Allah and the generosity of your standing with Allah. For when you leaned your back against the wall of a disbelieving woman who blocked the openings of her wall and locked the doors of her house so that she would not hear your words and voice, Gabriel descended and informed you of the intensity of her hatred and forbade you from seeking shade by her wall and standing in the courtyard of her house. Then he ascended to heaven and returned, frolicking in the meadows of the might of your station and grazing, and said to you: "O Muhammad, your Lord sends you greetings and says to you: 'Even if this woman is a disbeliever, your station is great and your rank is magnificent. I have forgiven her sins and burdens and pardoned her stumbles for the sake of your standing in the shade of that wall of hers, and I have opened her heart to Islam and poured upon her, for your sake, the precedents of favor.'" And another woman came out to hear your sweetest words, serve your station, delight her eyes with the vision of your face, and fill her innermost with the purity of your love. A man met her and said: "Do you love him?" She said: "Yes." He said: "By his right upon you, raise your veil and uncover your face so that I may look at you." She did that and informed her husband of what had happened. So he kindled an oven of fire and said to her, by way of testing 160: "By the right of the Master of the Righteous, enter this oven." She threw herself into it, her heart filled with love for you. Then her husband went and informed you of that, and you said to him: "Return to her and uncover her face and contemplate the reality of her affair." He returned, his heart pounding and his body restless, and saw her safe, covered with sweat. So his fear subsided and his terror left by your blessing. O my master, O Messenger of Allah, if the first woman attained happiness through the loftiness of your station and the secret of your care, and the second attained divine favors through the purity of her love for you and the perfection of your intercession—each of them acknowledged attaining your honor and the might of your protection—then how can he be deprived who seeks refuge in your presence, clings to your hem, spends his life in love for you, praising you, your wives, your descendants, and your Companions, stands at the courtyard of your doors, casts the staff of wandering in your vast spaces, and hopes to be enrolled in the ranks of your praisers and lovers? Or how can he be disappointed who praises a generous one, seeks help from a leader, glorifies a great one, or intends a forbearing one—and you are the most generous, most forbearing, most compassionate, and most merciful of people, the highest 161 in station and the greatest? I have extended the palms of supplication for your bestowal and spread the pages of my cheeks for the dust of your sandals. So grant me security in what I have hoped for from the gifts of your beneficence and desired from your great favor. For Allah created you with the character of forbearance and mercy and placed in your hands the keys of goodness and blessing. O my master, O Messenger of Allah, the estrangement has lasted long, the disease has become great, and the cure is scarce, while you are the locus of grace and fidelity. So succor your servant al-Maghribi, deliver him from the pitfalls of sins, wash him with the water of forbearance and pardon, and purify him from the filth of defects and faults. O my master, O Messenger of Allah, it is fitting that whoever seeks refuge with you, sets down his saddle at your door, and relies on you in all his affairs should be shown mercy and honor, be written in the register of the successful and inscribed, be connected to the rope of your love and not severed, be fed from the tables of your generosity and not deprived, be raised in rank in the station of the beloved ones with you and not diminished, that the darkness of the veil be removed from the eye of his insight 162, and that he drink the fullest cup from the springs of purity with the elite of the poles and the noble chiefs, that his branches leaf with the knowledge of realities and his twigs bear fruit with the gifts of gnosis, that his edifice be raised in the station of truth, and that the register of the lovers be populated. O my master, O Messenger of Allah, your portion with Allah is abundant, your excellence over all creatures is manifest, your secret in all worlds is dazzling, your magnificent merits cannot be counted by any counter nor encompassed by any encompassor, and your copious gifts put to shame the pouring clouds. They fulfill for whoever devotes himself to your service the attainment of wishes and the achievement of what is in the thoughts. O my master, O Messenger of Allah, if my body is far from reaching your noble tomb and obstacles have come between me and your lofty station, yet the soul has yearning and longing to behold your radiant countenance, and the spirit has attachment and connection—so draw me near to the carpet of your prophetic presence. 163 O my master, O Messenger of Allah, the glass of the heart has shattered from toil and fatigue, the tongue of the lover has grown weary from desire and request, the body of the yearning one has melted from loneliness and separation, and the spirit has vanished when the mirror of the eye of the eye did not meet the heart. O my master, O Messenger of Allah, is there a kindness that protects souls from destruction, or a glance that removes rust from hearts, or a flash that guides to the path of good and leads us in ways of right guidance? For you, O my master, O Messenger of Allah, are the one whose prayer is answered, mighty in pride, great in station and fortune. If you were to call the lion, it would answer; the pitch-black night, it would clear; the clouds, they would pour and drip; the wandering star, it would stop and stand still; the radiant full moon, it would eclipse; the lofty mountain, it would move and incline; a dead person, he would live and acknowledge 164 your care and confess; a calamity descending from heaven or emerging from the earth, it would depart by your blessing and turn away. All this in your presence is neither too great nor too heavy for you, whether of later or earlier matters, especially given what Allah has specially granted you of perfect intercession and magnificent rank, and what He has honored you with of lofty aspiration, sublime glory, and ancient nobility. And you have said: "Seek intercession through my station, for my station with Allah is great." So I ask You, O Allah, by his great station with You, by Your generosity and his might with You, to grant his intercession for us in what we have asked, and not to disappoint our hope in what we have hoped for in his presence and intended. For he is Your friend, Your chosen one, Your beloved, Your intimate, and the most beloved of Your creation to You, and the most honored of them with You. Whoever seeks refuge with him, You grant him refuge; whoever seeks his intercession with You, You have mercy on him. By the right of his supplication, have mercy on us for his sake; by the right of his protection with You, for Your favor is abundant, Your goodness is plentiful, Your beneficence is ancient, and Your generosity is all-encompassing. And forgive us, O Allah, and our parents, and the parents of our parents, and our teachers, our families, and our descendants.

And for our brothers who preceded us in faith, O Allah, gather us and them together in Your holy abode and the place of Your honor, in the best and most beloved state to You. Amen, amen, amen, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. To You, O possessor of glory and lineage, I come 107 108 A prisoner of sins whose bonds have fettered me, and the knot of love is only for You, the desire. So here I am, O Sultan of the Presence of his Lord, and the most perfect servant whose overflowing grace has poured and flowed. Poor, needy, sorrowful, submissive, and a visitor of this quarter, a servant with longing. And I am not afraid to be returned disappointed, for I have from Your abundant generosity, O Master of requests. And it is not right that one who comes to Your court seeking should return without the request, favor, and desire. Far be it, by Your truth, that he should fear disappointment, and Your overflowing grace cannot be counted. Grant, my Master, grant. So be for me goodness, while all of me is evil; so be an intercessor for me on the day when flight is of no avail. Likewise my fathers, my family, my kin, and all my companions and those who love me. By Your might, the lofty stations of their glory, and those through whom the non-Arabs and Arabs seek aid. Upon you be Allah's blessings and peace, and likewise upon them, as long as ranks are exalted through You. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad 109, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the intended door of Allah and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the treasury of generosity and munificence. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the seed of existence and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the direction of covenants. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the rising star of blessing and felicity and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the paradise of guests and visitors. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the fragrant one of garments and cloaks and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the noble one of fathers and grandfathers. None other than he. 110 O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the revealer of laws and limits and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the destroyer of the people of obstinacy and denial. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the one through whose blessing valleys and highlands shine and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the one who commanded night prayer with bowing and prostration. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the one who continues in the stages of ascent and elevation and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the one who glows with the remembrance of his Lord in standing and sitting. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad 111, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the one over whose head the banners of victory and conquest fluttered and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the one through whose care armies and troops were defeated. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the mirror of vision and witness and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the goal of hopes and intentions. So bless him, O Allah, and his family, a blessing by which You fulfill for us promises, suffice us against the evil of the spiteful and envious, and bestow upon us the neighborhood of Your beloved, our master Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in the abode of honor and eternity, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. The unique pearl of necklaces is none but Muhammad. The one spoken to by wild beasts and lions is none but Muhammad. The possessor of the Praiseworthy Station 165 is none but Muhammad. The one who unfurled the tied banner is none but Muhammad. The possessor of the witnessed place is none but Muhammad. 112 The possessor of the visited Pool 166 is none but Muhammad. The shade of extended prophethood is none but Muhammad. The one most elevated in bowing and prostration to the worshipped Lord is none but Muhammad. The one singled out for the Great Intercession 167 on the promised day is none but Muhammad. Ahmad, the Chosen One, in the highest realm, from * without fathers and from the most noble grandfathers. The best of those who came with clarification of guidance * for creatures or with determination of limits. He who has precedence in creation and who * attained the virtue of the master in the virtue of existence. He through whom the Merciful made the Night Journey 168 to the heights, * possessing witness in the Holy Presence. He through whom all worlds shone, * through whom valleys and highlands rejoiced. O Messenger of Allah, O you who brought us * from the Revelation: "Fulfill your covenants." Intercede, intercede for the poor needy one * on the day of gathering of people from the depths of graves. And repel, repel the plot of those who plot against him, * and grant security on the harsh day. For he is one with sin, but he hopes * from the Generous One for His favor at existence. And upon you, those ascending to the peaks of elevation 113, * and likewise the Companions and followers, * as long as the warblers sing in a distant garden, Or the caravan intends with a pure resolve, * or the Mother of Cities 169 comes to what the crowds shelter, Or the seal is granted with the best outcome to one * for whom Allah has perfected all intentions. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the one whose aspiration rose above the Pleiades and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the one for whom contentment sufficed as satiety and adornment. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the one to whom You granted a lofty station and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the one whom You took as a beloved, a sincere friend. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad 114, the ornament of ornaments, who is none other than the one whom You chose as a confidant interlocutor and the delight of the eye, who is none other than the one whom You selected.

For the treasures of Your unseen 170 none is a trustworthy, pious guardian but him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, whom none has been given a full cup from the wine of Your love but him; the delight of the eye, whom none has been fed with fresh ripe fruits from Your paradise but him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, whom none has been granted from Your perfections a pure character but him; the delight of the eye, whom none has been given a complete, intelligent mind but him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, whom none has been created as a well-formed human but him; the delight of the eye, whom none has been made pure in death and life but him. So bless him, O Allah, and his family with a blessing that grants us in Your obedience an accepted, pleasing deed, and through it establish us in the abode of Your honors a lofty rank and a high station, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. None was spoken to by the moon in the cradle as a child but Muhammad; none was chosen by Allah while Adam was between water and clay as a messenger and prophet but Muhammad; none was singled out by Allah with His gaze 171 to the exclusion of other chosen and pious ones but Muhammad; none was selected by Allah as a model for the righteous and the saints 172 but Muhammad; none drew from the sea of his sciences all the gnostics 173 and the erring but Muhammad; none borrowed from his light the great wise and intelligent but Muhammad; none was made by Allah an imam 174 for all messengers and prophets but Muhammad; none did Allah honor his community over all communities and make him a rightly guided guide but Muhammad; none was given by his Lord in the highest paradises a lofty station and high rank but Muhammad. O our Lord, bless Muhammad, the best of creation, among the beloved; give me to drink to the noble one; deliver me, a sorrowful lover, leave me, and my tears flow generously. This separation has burned my heart; is there any return? O people of love, my heart is scorched from distance; is there a physician who knows what is with me? My comfort is only union; from my desire, the pole of perfection 175 is my means on the day of questioning; Muhammad, the best of creation, the shelter of mankind, the chosen one, Taha 176, the imam to be followed, the eraser of sins, the sea of fidelity; whose remembrance is a treasure with me; the remembrance of the Messenger repels harm; whenever I say "Muhammad," I overcome enemies; I attained my wish; glad tidings, O Muslims! Increase blessings on the trustworthy one, the best of mankind, the treasure of the firm on the Day of Resurrection, the chosen one, the ornament of the face; then be pleased with his family, filling space, and with his companions, as long as dawn shines with his light and the evening yellows. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, before whom none bowed their heads in awe but him; the delight of the eye, for whose love none were created souls but him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, with whose name none adorned scrolls but him; the delight of the eye, by whose love none made fruits ripen but him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, from whose countenance none made suns shine but him; the delight of the eye, by whose blessing none guided suns but him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, by whom none made the frowning face of time smile but him; the delight of the eye, by whose existence none removed hardship and misfortune but him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, by whom none brought lessons but him; the delight of the eye, by whom none illuminated eyelashes but him. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, by whose rank none facilitated the difficult matter but him; the delight of the eye, by whose intercession none freed the imprisoned but him. So bless him, O Allah, and his family with a blessing that makes us among those who are constant in Your remembrance in standing and sitting, and through it we become among those whom You have pardoned in the questioning of the grave and said to them: "Sleep the sleep of a bride," by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. None was extolled in rank by the Holy King 177 but Muhammad; none was raised in rank above the chief and the subordinate but Muhammad; none did Allah show mercy through to despair and hopelessness but Muhammad; none did Allah move through the states of the ecstatics 178 and cups from the overflow of his bounty revolved around them but Muhammad; none did Allah abrogate through the religion of the Jews, Christians, and Magians but Muhammad; none did his message encompass the near and far and all kinds and species but Muhammad; none did Allah repel through him from his community harm and misery but Muhammad; none did Allah support his face among the prophets, messengers, and envoys, and clothe him with the best garments of His might but Muhammad. We are seated in the presence of Allah; cups of overflow revolve around us. What a presence, pure and fragrant, whose scent perfumes souls! Allah brought forth its light in the heaven of glory, a light in which suns disappear. It was unveiled in the witnessing of intimacy, with cheeks of a bride in robes of beauty. By the manifestation of its beauty, misfortune departed and hardships vanished from time. By an oath, if it were to strut over the lands of the tomb, it would revive the buried. The mind of the prudent is bewildered by it, and why not? Its beauty's revealer is the Holy One. Our tears are released before it, and in its love our heart is imprisoned. Its abode is the east of the dwellings; who then can traverse it? We found no one. Gardens bloomed in it for nearness, and trees of hopes blossomed. May we never cease in its love, and may every overflow be guarded by its generosity.

Muhammad saw the Gardens of Eden and the houris drawing near to Muhammad. Muhammad is the delight of the eyes in what he narrated on the Night of the Ascension 273, Muhammad. Muhammad, who truly saw his Lord with his own eyes openly, Muhammad. Muhammad, whom Moses 274 chose as an intermediary, and glory exalts Muhammad. Muhammad, son of ‘Imran 275, beheld from his beauty when Muhammad conversed with him. Muhammad, upon whom appears the beauty of the Lord — how exalted is Muhammad! Muhammad, who attained the wishes through his vision for his community, Muhammad. Muhammad, who became an intercessor for the people of the Supreme Standing 276, Muhammad. Muhammad, owner of the lofty chambers 277 — above all creation is our master Muhammad. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments, who is the very point of the secret and the delight of the eye, who is the very veil of concealment. So bless him, O Allah, and his family with a blessing by which You illuminate for us the grave and erase from us the burden, and protect us through its blessing in secret and in public, by Your grace and generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Lord of the worlds. Muhammad is none other than the tongue of praise and gratitude; Muhammad is none other than the locus of praise and patience; Muhammad is none other than the truthful in speech and report; Muhammad is none other than the protector of the sanctuary and the rain; Muhammad is none other than the great in station and danger; Muhammad is none other than the believer of terror and remembrance; Muhammad is none other than the remover of affliction and harm; Muhammad is none other than the fragrant breeze and forgiveness; Muhammad is none other than the intercessor of servants in the scattering and gathering. ❖ O radiant countenance, O countenance of the full moon, O adornment of the world, O delight of time, O forerunner in the ornament of glory, who mounted none but his son-in-law 278 in highness, might, and victory. O qibla 279 of hopes, O ultimate aim, O one who trails the train of lordship and pride. You are the one whom my heart and mind call; You are the one whom the secret and the open bestow. You are the one whose station is in the house of my heart; the dweller of this house knows by claim. So whoever befriends you in might and contentment, and whoever opposes me in humiliation and compulsion — the entire command is led to you, submissive, and comes by Allah's permission in the grasp of the overwhelming 280.

And here, my spiritual greetings be upon you, as long as the fragrant breezes of musk blow from the garden of flowers. And may the downpour of sorrow water the branches of a paradise that echoes in its boughs the melody of life. O Allah, bless and grant peace to our master and lord Muhammad and to the family of our master Muhammad, the ornament of ornaments 281, who has appeared in the manifestations of might and majesty only as himself, and the delight of the eye 282, who has delivered sermons from the pulpits of proximity and union only as himself. The poem, which is this: I am in the sanctuary of the master of messengers, the beloved of God, the trustworthy prophet. I am in the sanctuary of Ahmad al-Mustafa 305, and he who brought us the clear Book. I am in the sanctuary of Ahmad al-Muqtada 306, for his sanctuary is impregnable and strong. 156 I am in the sanctuary of Ahmad al-Mujtaba 307, my refuge, the intercessor for the sinners. I am in the sanctuary of the master of the two weighty things 308, the grandfather of al-Husayn 309, the established prophet. I am in his sanctuary, and nothing like his sanctuary is a security and fortress from the aggressors. I am in his sanctuary, and to whom do I belong? I am in the sanctuary of the master of the humble. I am in his sanctuary, by him I protect myself, for I am weak and have no helper. I am in his sanctuary, and I hope through him to be organized in his party of the successful.

O master of the Basin 310, O my provision, my glory, my treasure, and my impregnable fortress! O leader of the radiant ones 311, O my master, and the succor of the captive, the sorrowful and grieving! We have answered, we have answered our turning 312 with the spirit of the Virgin 313, strong in certainty. He has repelled calamities and interposed between us and the powerful, willful, accursed one 314. And at the Bridge 315, grant us succor so that we may pass like lightning among those who hasten. To You we complain of our poverty, and You are the hoped-for one for those who hasten. O, the drink of orphans, give me to drink that I may revive what is perishing among the dead. And anoint my eyelids with the vision of You, O desire of the heart, O master of the messengers! And grant it to Your servant and bestow it upon him, even if he is among the prodigal. No calamity ever befell me but I sought succor and cried, 'O master of the messengers!' And I found Your door wide of space, pouring forth gifts upon the needy. O full moon, O my goal, O pride, O master of the messengers! Upon You be the prayer that pleases You and the purest peace for long years. It is completed by the praise of God, His good help, and His beautiful success. There is no power nor strength except through God, the High, the Mighty. It was finished by the hand of the weak, perishing one, in need of his Lord's mercy, Ahmad ibn Aj 'Umar—may God forgive him and his teachers. Amen, by the rank of the truthful, the most glorious, on the 6th of Dhu al-Hijja 316 in the year... And I bear witness that there is no god but God, and I bear witness that our master, our prophet, and our lord Muhammad is His servant and His messenger.
