- More than one scholar of the early and later generations, among the exegetes and others, mentioned that the dam of Ma'rib [1] was constructed such that water flowed between two mountains. In ancient times, they built a very solid dam between them, so that the water rose and reached the tops of the two mountains. They planted gardens, fruitful trees, and abundant crops there. It is said that the first to build it was Saba' [2] ibn Yashjub, who directed seventy valleys to flow into it and made thirty outlets for the water to exit. He died before completing its construction, so Himyar [3] completed it after him. Its area was a league by a league [4]. They lived in great bliss, a pleasant life, and good days, until Qatada [5] and others mentioned that a woman would pass by with a basket on her head, and it would become filled with fruits falling from their abundance and ripeness. They also mentioned that there were no fleas or harmful insects in their land, due to the purity of their air and the goodness of their environment, as Allah the Exalted said: "Indeed, for Saba' there was a sign in their dwelling place: two gardens on the right and on the left. Eat from the provision of your Lord and be grateful to Him. A good land and a forgiving Lord" [6].
